It seems to me as though many of my fellow atheists are too concerned about being politically correct; it’s as though many of them aren’t willing to get down and get dirty, so to speak. I’m talking about ‘upping the anti,’ taking the battle to the non-atheists, exploiting the weaknesses in mainstream religions and being more pro-active in general. We have picked a fight with the toughest kid in the playground, a kid for whom no level of dirty fighting is too low and we can either stand and fight or lurk in the shadows behind the toilet block. Do you not realize that we have an obligation to future generations to do all we can to be rid of the primitive superstitious nonsense that is religion?

Trying to unify "Team Atheist" is like turn a jazz band into a symphony orchestra. We're all great at our own solo extemporizing, but try to get us to follow a pre-written plan and you'll be sorely disappointed.

I wouldn't worry about the religion stuff, though. Like most bullies, they're really more bluster than brawn, and in the grand scheme of things, they just need consistent needling before they reveal their true colors. And it's easier to inflict constant needling from a bunch of freethinkers.

I think what annoys Xians the most is that we didn't really start the fire, but by becoming fanatic, radical Atheists we don't prove strength we prove we are not any better than the people we are reflecting. What we need to be doing as atheists is redefining it to what we think it should be seen as and not let others tell us what they think it is and we do that when we speak out against them trying to label us how they see fit at every turn. Christianty toppling is not going to happen any time soon but one day it might and it will not have an Atheist hand behind it but an xian hand what we need to be doing is making sure the freedom to choose and think is still availble to all and stocking our ranks with people that want too stand with us and represent us with an aim of remaining how we are.

I haven't read the other answers, but I just thought I would let you know that I truly believe that some atheists feel like there's no point to arguing with extremists, you might as well talk to the wall. I would imagine that even though you feel like these atheists aren't fighting the good fight, their children are likely to be atheists so that's one step for your cause! I think as far as ridding ourselves of mainstream religions we have a long way to go and many feel helpless. Kind of like leaving your house to go vote. ;)

Given that I just crossed over 25,000 points-
mostly answering questions in R&S with an atheist's perspective-
I think I'm a member of the team.

I challenge religion at nearly every turn.

I think you are confused. There is no Team Atheist and we don't want to convert anyone. If people want to have a religion that is their RIGHT. We are not the ones who want to take rights away from people. We simply want to maintain our right not to follow their religious rules.

Team atheist? I am not on any team I am an individual with my own thoughts and opinions and I don't agree with every atheist either. You be your kind of atheist and let others be the type that best suits them. Saying that is just as bad as theists trying to convert others to their mode of belief.

Sorry sweetie but I have no desire to rid people of their beliefs. The US is still a free country and they can believe whatever they want to. My only fight is for the rights of everyone to do that - Atheists included.

I'm all for upping the anti and asking tough questions, but (in one instance) I don't think we need to answer every question with "there is no heaven" or "faith is silly". I'm totally against buttoning my lip but we don't need to verbally slap someone upside the head every time we answer a question.

Get over it.

Religion hasn't really affected me very much, so I don't really care.

In fact, the wisest person I know is a Christian.

I just don't believe in God; I'm not going to make a scene about it.
