I am always anxious and nervous all the time. I'm sure some it is genetic, but for the most part it was because of the way I was raised. I won't bore you with details, but let's just say that my parents really messed with my head.

What are some ways I can get over this and learn how to relax? I am always judgemental and critical of how others pereceive me. I just want to be relax and be like everyone else.

The first thing you must learn to relax is to learn how to breathe properly. When you become anxious and nervous, pay attention to your breathing patterns. You will find that your breaths are going to be short and shallow and sometimes you may even hold your breath without even realizing it. Starting taking deep cleansing breaths....breathing in deep through your nose and releasing slowing through your mouth. You will find that you will soon become more relaxed and feel that your are thinking more clearly. From there, do an exercise where you start from your toes tightening every muscle in your body up to your neck. Then slowly relax those muscles starting at the neck on through down to your toes. Do both the breathing and muscle exercises whenever you start to feel the anxiety and nervousness coming on. It's a start.....from there, join a help group if needed where you can talk it out with others who may experience the same issues that you have experienced. All of this works....I am living proof. Been there and now practice everything I have told you here.

I work with a very difficult population of students at school and we spend a lot of time trying different things to relax. One thing that I have found that works for the kids and many adults is taking a deep breath in while you count to 5 in your head. Then you relase that breath slowly while counting to 5 in your head again. Remember to do this slowly so you don't get light headed. This is called "take 5" and it works very well and can be done anywhere. Some days I need to repeat take 5 a couple of times in a row, other times just once is a good fix for the situation. I hope this helps.

aside from mind altering substances, find things you love doing and do them. a philosophy professor told me that reality is only made of what you make it. so if you're stressed about what other people think, don't be, because you're the only person that makes your reality. if they don't like you/what you're doing, who the hell cares? They don't matter. Only you do. Anyway, for all you know, they could be nervous about how you perceive them.
