The "what's up" you are talking about is "Qué pasa?" and means literally "What happens?"

Qué onda is Mexican slang that also means what's up, but literally means "What wave?" (wave as in micro wave)

There are many different ways to say whats up in Spanish and the main difference is regional, but "Qué pasa" is the textbook version.
