I'm getting a male Great Dane next week that is a year and a half old. He is 140 LBS right now (I know he eats a gallon of Purina dog chow a day). I'm interested in hearing how much dog food, you Dane owners go through each month so I can plan ahead. Also, if you own a Dane and have any advice or tips, throw them at me.Thanks!

If you feed yours a natural brand dog food. How much of it do you feed yours a day? (Please note if your Dane is around a year and half or 140 LBS, makes it easier to compare)

Well, if you feed a higher quality food, you don't have to feed as much. Purina is not very good dog chow. In fact, it is some of the lowest. If you feed your dog poor quality food, you'll be feeding more fillers than anything else. This means more going in, and more coming out! My 70 lb. lab eats Canidae and eats about 4 cups/day (he's fairly high energy, though). Start with the feeding directions on the back of the bag, and then increase or decrease as needed to help him maintain an appropriate weight.

Get this dog off Purina Dog Chow!!! No dog, but especially a giant breed like a Dane should be fed a low quality store brand food. Stay away from foods that contain corn, wheat, soy & by products. Some good food choices for a Dane:
Wellness, Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Innova, Solid Gold, Timberwolf, Merrick to just name a few.
I'm currently feeding 3 Danes...I'm feeding Wellness Super5 mix chicken . They get 4 cups of dry Wellness and 1/2 can of the wet Wellness daily per dog (2 cups dry & 1/4 can wet am, 2 cups dry & 1/4 can wet pm. (When I fed Canidae All Life Stages it was the same amount)My Danes are 16 months, 17 months and 5 years old. My 5 year old is a spayed female, my 16 month old is a neutered male and the 17 month old is an intact male, my show boy. My Danes are all in excellant condition, at excellant weight. A Dane should be neither to fat or too thin.
(my son feeds his Labs Canidae and they each get 1 3/4 - 2 cups per day per dog divided into two feedings. They weigh 80# each)
Go to the Great Dane Club Of America web site. It has some great info.
I use @ 80# a month for 3 Danes.
Make sure to feed your Dane twice daily. Get proper obedience training & socialization. Remember a Dane is a indoor dog not outdoor.
A real great book I recommend to all Dane people is The Great Dane Model of Nobility by Jill Swedlow. It is wonderful book with correct info written by a very, very knowledgable Dane person.

i feed a 50 and 70 lb dog a total of 6 cups dry a day and i use half a 13 oz can a day. a dane should be eating somewhere around that a day of premium dog food.....something like purina he may need more. I use a 15 lb bag a dry food a week about $30 a bag and maybe 10$ a week on canned food....yea and i add canned pumpkin and yogurt a few extra dollars if u can do it. good thing is you can buy big bags because you know you will use it fast and that is a money saver. all danes i have taken care of ate about 6 cups a day of plain dry. Just figure if you are adding can you use less dry but if it is only dry food you may be using about 8 cups a day while he is still young. in a few years you may be able to cut that back depending on energy level.

I have a 7 mos old dane pup. He eats 8 cups of ChickenSoup for the Dog Lovers Soul each day (sounds dumb, but good food). I break it into 3 meals for him so his tummy doesn't stretch out too much. This can cause bloat, which is a horribly painful death to most dogs. Better food means less quantity in his belly, and less in the yard.
My breeder feeds her danes (1.5 - 4 yrs) each about 6 cups of Canidae each day. Some get a little more, some a little less depending on their activity level and body type. It depends on the dog. If he starts getting pudgy, cut him back. If you see every rib and hip bones sticking out, give a little more.
Good Luck!

First off, I'd gradually wean him to a different brand of dry food. At a minimum, Purina Pro Plan would be better. There are a lot of variables for danes...activity, age etc. Danes are a lean breed. I'm sure you'll head to the Vet to get him checked as soon as you get him so talk to your Vet about his weight. You'll need to feed him twice a day. He may require the average 8-10 cups per day. He probably in the middle of his last growth spurt right now. As he matures the amount of food they require does decrease. There are a lot of good websites w/ dane info.

I have never had a Great Dane, but friends of mine own them and they love them. This is what I found on eating habits, "Assuming a high-quality food, the amount to give your Great Dane varies greatly with age and gender." This is what I found about the amount, "males 8 to 10 cups". The article I read was very informative. You may want to take a look at it.
