The pharisees in the bible were very religious they would get on everybody case who wasn't doing everything that they thought was right. They were so busy looking on the outside they completely missed God's message. Jesus was spiritual. It's how we deal with the heart.

Neither connotates good or bad in and of themselves. For instance, God is spirit and therefore spiritual. However, so is Satan spiritual, being a spiritual being. Also, there are such things as false religion and true religion. But in general, I would say religion has to do with doctrines purposed to help us understand and to worship God (and in the case of Christianity, to interpret and explain His inspired Word as found in the Bible). And spirituality simply has to do with issues regarding our spirit or soul as opposed to our "flesh."

This I'd like to know as well...
Wiccan Rider: What is spiritual about trusting your senses? That's rational not spiritual.
Jim!: Your answer makes sense to me in all but the semantic sense. Am I just hung up on the semantics of the root "spirit?" What does a "spirit" have to do with centering yourself with your environment or the universe? Is there a spirit, that is something other than the mind/consciousness?

Spiritual is more ambiguous and with much doctrine and dogma, and is more eclectic. Religions are usually organized and passed down through families and cultures. I also think they can coexist. This is my understanding of the difference.

Religious is having belief in and reverence for God. Religion is what you believe.
Spirituality is how one lives out their religious beliefs.

There is a big difference!
Religion is following a set of doctrines.
Spirituality is finding center with your environment, and the Universe!

"Spiritual" is what "religious people" say that they are when the truth is...they are just too bloody lazy to get out of bed on Sunday and go to Mass....
As in: "Gee, Father...I don't need to go to Church. You see...I'm not "religious' - I'M "spiritual".
Like that's supposed to impress me.

Religion is man-made it is physical, and it is the domain of Satan. It is evil.
Spiritual is of God the Father, it is of the spirit, it was made without hands, and it is the domain of God the Father.
It is Love for one another as Jesus the Christ has Loved us.
