The idea of low weight high reps for "toning" is completely bogus and one of the biggest misconceptions out there. Low weights do not stress skeletal muscles enough to make them grow in any fashion, big or small. Also, muscle size is determined by diet - simply lifting weights will not cause a person to grow big. Additionally, women have a tenth of the testosterone levels men do so it's extremely difficult for them to gain much muscle mass.

The most small weights many reps will do is burn a few calories and increase endurance maybe a little bit, but you won't see any change in physique. Don't be afraid to lift heavier weights within a 10-12 rep range, you won't get big muscles from doing this.

Yes and no :) I've been lifting for a year now, doing mostly low weight, high rep. I'm tone but I wanted more definition and started lifting heavier weight and low rep, I'm starting to feel and see a small difference, but definately no "bulk". It's true women don't bulk up, not without some serious supplements to help us do so.

Yes. small to medium weight, many reps will tone you without bulking you up. Go to your local bookstore and check out their books on weight training; you'll find all the basics you need.

IF YOU ARE FEMALE YOU DON'T REALLY HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT GETTING BIG. YOUR BODY LACKS THE ABUNDANCE OF TESTOSTERONE A MAN'S BODY PRODUCES TO GET "BIG." ANYTHING YOU DO WILL BE TONING IF YOU LIFT HIGH REP LOW WEIGH YOU WILL INCREASE ENDURANCE. IF YOU LIFT HEAVIER YOU WILL GAIN STRENGTH. NOTE STRENGTH DOES NOT EQUAL SIZE.
