My cat I've had for about a year has all of a sudden started hissing, growling, and screaming for no apparent reason. My mom had brought a small, unfamiliar kitten into the house for a couple hours, and the cat is always uncomfortable around kittens, so I thought that may have had something to do with it. But the kitten has been gone for more than a day now!
Besides, we have brought other cats into the house before and she's never reacted like this. She'll just sit in the corner making all these noises at no one/nothing. If you go over and try to pet her, she freaks out even worse. All night long she was waking everyone up with her screaming. I have no idea what's going on. We called the vet and no one has called us back. Unfortunately, we can't really afford to take her in...please help!!

Um..thanks for your concern. I actually just got another job and she was very ill wilth an infection this summer which essentially maxed out our CareCredit account. If nothing else, I will absolutely use my emergency credit card to help her. I was just hoping I could get some help here before having to take her to the vet.
Also, she's already fixed, so she's not in heat.

Give her at least another day before everybody tries to make you feel like a neglectful owner not rushing your cat to the vet. She is obviously upset, but is she still eating, drinking etc? (If she has stopped eating, drinking, using the bathroom, then maybe its a little more serious)
Is your house a single cat home? Chances are she just feels violated that the other kitten was hanging around on her territory. I have 3 indoor cats, but also caretake for some spayed ferals outside. Every once in a while, one of the strays will come into my house when i open the door to go feed them, and its sets off every cat inside my house. Even long after the stray is back outside and long gone, one of my cats will continue to growl and hiss at me.
Just be patient and give her extra love and attention. Hope this helps

Cat Hissing For No Reason

Hissing and growling are signs of either fear or pain. If the kitten's gone and she knows it's gone, you can eliminate the 'fear' which leaves the 'pain'. It has to be bad for a cat to react that strongly, so a vet trip is a must in this case. She's hurting and being with people trying to calm her down is only making her tense up worse.

I had this problem with my Siamese cat. We found a small kitten outside in the sewage and bought her in to our home. The kitten could not have been more than 8 weeks old. My Siamese hissed and growled from the time we brought the kitten in until two weeks after it was gone. We wanted to keep the kitten, but with our Siamese not accepting her we did not want to put the kitten through any unnecessary torment. We found another home for the kitten. As far as my Siamese, it took her two weeks for her to allow me to pet her. Each time I would enter the room she would sit down, hissed, and growl at me. When I would walk over to her to pet her, she would take off to another room. My cat was highly upset that we brought another kitten into home and it sounds like you are experiencing the same thing. She will get over it - - treats might help speed up the process. Good luck.

A quick fix is clean clothes furniture and area foreign kitty may have touched, something to change the scent. I used to have a cat that flipped out growling, hissing and spitting at the sight of a kitten but not an adult cat.

Separation anxiety and moving all at once. She's stressed and is letting you know that she's upset. That doesn't mean that she won't get used to it. Just a little hint, keep an eye out for her peeing in your house. She may do this out of frustration, and then by hanging out where she just peed all the time, she may get a UTI. Then you might get stuck with crate training. Look though your house for places where she might pee and you not notice it. Under a couch, behind a dresser, whatever. It's a big stress response.

A few years ago, my cat suddenly began growling at random times and hissing at me when I came to check on him. It took several trips to the vet before it was discovered that he had torn a ligament in his knee. The vet gave me a pain killer to give to my cat and it took almost a year before he was fully healed. Thankfully it healed on it's own and it did not need surgery.

My female cat does this too. You can pet her one minute, then the next you'd think her head would spin and she'd spew green vomit the way she carries on.

Me, I just keep annoying her. Let her have her hissy fit, pat her on the head and away she goes.

As long as they are eating and drinking, not acting abnormal in any other way, I just chalk it up that she's had too much cat nip in her lifetime.......

Sounds like she's in heat. Don'tlet her outside - she'll end up pregnant in no time. Give it a few days and she'll stop.
