My step-daughter, Chloe, and her best friend, Reagan are in 7th grade. Reagan is on the school volleyball team. She made a new friend Ashley, who is in the 8th grade. Ashley asked if she could email Reagan. Reagan added her email to her list. Soon, Ashley told Reagan she had a cousin in a nearby town and asked if she would like to chat with him. Reagan started emailing this guy who was supposed to be in about the same grade. He also began emailing Chloe from time to time. When Reagan's mom checked her computer, she found some inappropriate emails from this guy, one of which said he was or would be outside her house in the bushes waiting for her.

Now, it has since been discovered, with the help of the police, that Ashley and her brother were just playing a trick on Reagan.

My question is this: Should Ashley and her brother be punished for their behavior which caused Reagan's mom to be very worried about her daughter's safety? Why or why not?

Absolutely they should be punished. What they did was very cruel and inappropriate. Not only that, but they did something that required the police, pulling them away from investigating real crimes. I think we should teach children to treat other people as they would want to be treated, "the golden rule." No one has the right to harass people or make them feel afraid. If they were my children, they wouldn't even see the computer for a year.

Ashley and her brother should be punished whether Reagan's mom worried or not. Some states are starting to pass laws that make it illegal to impersonate other people and/or harass people on the Internet. Even though their trick was seemingly harmless, it's not something the parents should just let slide.

I think Ashley and her brother should give this girl an apology as well as the police. This was incredibly irresponsible for both of them a good spanking would fix them really quickly. Grounding won't help with that, writing an essay please I will not make up lies to hurt people. That won't teach them anything.

The truth is the mom of Reagan overreacted by going to the police.

They should be punished but not too harshly. DON'T TAKE OUT THE BELT!!! That is never the solution to the problem. Just tell her that it's not right to be playing pranks like that on other people because when she's older she could get into serious trouble. So just give her a lecture about the importance of internet saftey.

Why wasn't Regan's mother supervising her daughter's time on the computer? Why wasn't there adult supervision when this child was on the computer? I think Reagan's mother should be punished for not doing HER job as a parent and paying attention to what her child was doing online.

Absolutly, they had the police involved. Playing a trick is one thing but it got way out of hand and they caused a lot of trouble. They need to be taught that ther are consiquences for their actions. Even if it was a joke.

I think they should be punished for at least a month. It is really bad messing with someones feelings. Didn't you hear what happened to the girl.

i think they should. i mean yea it was a joke but that couldve been serious. i mean ive heard of all these cases of rape with these weird guys talking to girls like chloe online. i think someone should talk to them and tell them that wasn't a smart thing to do. not a serious punishment, but one to make them think to never do that again.

Do you even have to ask?????

What they did was malicious and if at their ages they can do something like that, what could they do in 10 years? Of course they need to be punished and they need to be told exactly why what they did was wrong.
