A man lives in a small town with limited employment opportunity and has worked nearly 15 years at a warehouse which didnt require a high school diploma or Ged. This man has proven to be a loyal, reliable asset to the company. He shows up for work on time. Does his job with no problem.
Moving on..... the warehouse informs the workers that they will be closing down
So this man thats once was an asset to the company has joined the list of unemployed workers in amercia along with several other associates.
Moving on....This man and several other associates from the same warehouse go to apply for positions in which they are completly qualified for, once they get the application and begin filling it out they come to the part about education. Well Im sure you can imagine the rest .....High school diploma or GED required....several associates that are not qualified because they hold no Diploma.

Acheiving a diploma shows one can be committed as well as reliable & responsible. And yes I agree that we all need education. But there are many ways of obtaining basic education. And does the education that one gets from daily living account for anything? How about the man that has worked 15years for the same company and has not one time called in or been late or had any write ups or for that matter ever had any issues with doing his job. Doesnt that account for something? There are a big group of people in our country that dont carry a diploma but are just as capable of doing the job as the person thats does carry the diploma. I could understand if the position was a specialized position but in this case they are not. Is this a form of discrimination? I wonder at times. Does a lawyer have to have a degree to be a lawyer or a Dr. ofcourse but again those are specialized fieldsI. Does a cashier have to carry a degree or diploma? Not most likely! What about life skills? Daily skills?

Well.... I assume the man will obtain his diploma so that his family will not go hungry. However in my opinion this is a form of discrimination, this man is just as qualified to do the job as the man with the diploma.

Addressing the comment below in regards to taking night classes. I personally think that advancing ones self in any form is always a plus. Keeping that in mind I also understand that education cost dollars, and one has to work to cover the cost of the education. Maybe if a company that pays $7 or $8.00 an hr to there associates, offers to cover the cost of Night classes then the associates would be more willing to attend the class.
Moving on.... my opinion stands firm.
It doesnt take a genuis to stand at a conveyor belt and run a cordless drill and certainly not to pack items in to a box. It also doesnt take a genuis to understand the importance of this problem.

The educational requirements for many jobs is on the rise and has been for years. In many factories and warehouses the requirement is being extended to require a Associates degree of some sort in order to hold a position. I would suggest that this person buy a GED study guide and take the test, then to avoid this situation in the future he should take night classes to obtain an Associates degree.

Maybe you should fill out the application anyway, but put your experience, put down that you have worked for 15 years, sometimes a lack of a diploma or GED can be made up for in years of experience.

These days, they ask for a degree or equivalent work experience depending on the field.
