Look at the responses you've received from these kinds of "Christians." They're absolutely morally twisted. They're brainless bigots who make their religion the excuse for their irrational hatred - and honestly, what could be more despicable than that? And yes, many of them have deep-seated issues with their own sexuality, as has been demonstrated over and over again.
What's truly hilarious is that every time a Ted Haggard type gets busted indulging in the very "sin" he's built his career condemning, they only take it as further proof that homosexuality is the result of poor decision-making - a willful "crossing over to the dark side" - rather than realizing that it's not the sexuality, but the hypocrisy that's disgusting and immoral.
And this is nothing new for so-called "religious" folk - they used to use the Bible to "prove" that black people were inferior and therefore proper to keep as slaves. Religion provides a powerful language for the expression of either good or evil, depending on who's using it; but it's precisely because it's based on irrational ideas - like the inspired infallibility of a book - that it's so easily twisted to suit the bigot's agenda.

I believe that many Christians are obsessed with homosexuality, because it involves feelings that most have had at some stage of their development and it easily marks those who are "different". They don't cry about the other things because they have a distorted view of deviance, Crime in society, environmental destruction, corruption, and poverty lack the same sense of intimacy and innate and unchangeable nature. They seem harder to identify and when identified easier to isolate and punish. Christians can disregard their responsibility for the evil in the world and harp about the immorality of sexual orientation easily stereotyped and condemned.

First, it is not just Christians who are against homosexuality. Second, the act of homosexuality; two men, is not a natural act. Third, what you say on the nature of sin is true. Fourth; however, the violence et-cetera, et-cetera in our societies is bad, this is true, but it does not spread disease, homosexuality does, in the form of Aids. Although I am aware it does not come solely from the gay community. Lastly, while I personally do not agree with homosexuality, I do not attack it, but I would not encourage it either. For I must remain true too my principles, which has nothing to do with 'homophobia,' by the way, which for me is a poor excuse at trying to turn the tables on someone else and shift responsibility from the individual who takes the path of homosexuality.

Fortunately, not all attack homosexuals. I accept them for what they are and I care for the ones who are my friends. I know there's tons of people that think like me.
I have also seen people (Christians and not) protesting for crime, environmental destruction, etc....
I really don't know why SOME Christians are indeed obsessed with homosexuality (i.e. the ones that say that God hates fags). I think being a fundamentalist has something to do with it but I may be wrong or it may very well not be the only reason.

With all due respect, you are hanging around the wrong kind of Christian. Or, are you depending on the media to give you your information on Christians? I could introduce you to a multitude who quietly are working to do just the good things you mentioned, but how often will that make the news? (But come to think of it, they are the same people who wouldn't want what they're doing to be on the news; they'd think it was boastful.)
Edit--ah, in rereading I see you are talking about Christians on this forum. There are more questions asked of us confronting us on this issue than I ever see about crime, poverty, etc. Interestingly, I asked a question about why people are more charitable at Christmas-time, and got my head handed to me by a definite non-Christian. If you want to start discussions about social justice, I'm with you!

I think they have a need to seek out a local evil, one that is observable in their vicinity, in order to feel like they are carrying on the good fight. This is the only reason I can see them protesting homosexuality or Freemasons. There aren't gangs in their town or high levels of crime (at least not in the many small towns or suburbs) and there is a Lodge or a guy or two who might be gay.

because something like homosexuality takes the least amount of knowledge to have a strong opinion on...
the rest of those subjects require some thought behind them if you want to be seen to have strong opinions and beliefs about them!

Because they bring God's wrath down on all of us.
"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'" -- Rev. Jerry Falwell blaming America for 9/11

I'm not sure...I think it might have something to do with that out-of-date book they are living by. I wonder why we aren't putting all Epileptics to death? That must be because we have come to relaize there is some scientific cause for siezures, not demons...but hey let's all live our lives by the book anyhow.

Because only homosexuals openly parade what they do and seek government endorsement of it. No one goes around saying, "I am a criminal so give me tax breaks" nor are there "criminal pride" days. No one goes to the government and says, "I destroy the environment, will you give me tax breaks?" nor are there tv shows which have theme that corruption, poverty or environmental destruction is good. So the difference is that people know that crime, environmental destruction, corruption and poverty are not good things..... We may not really stop it, but no one pretends those are good things like people parade homosexuality as a good thing.
