If you can take an element of your design (instead of the whole desing) and start there, then yes, go for it.
I have a larger tattoo on my leg, but not from my knee to my ankle (not yet anyway). I went big but not too big, I also recommend this because it will take a lot of time and if you get something too large you will have to get it filled in over time. Like get the outline first, let it heal and then get it rest filled in. If you choose a smaller section to begin with you can get that part completely finished and then decide to get the rest or not. I haven't gotten anymore on my leg, just because I haven't really had the money and well.. I was sick for a while (long story) so I couldn't go, but I am happy with what I have so far going.
If your interested in seeing what my tattoo looks like, email me and I'll send you a pic.
I am all for you going big and getting what you want, but if you have never gotten a tattoo before, you don't think about the time and the pain involved. Mine took 5 hours to complete and it's not as big as you want. I don't think I could handle getting a tattoo for more than 5 hours, my leg was very sore afterward. Just a word of caution... but I am not against the idea.
What is your tattoo going to be of?

I've been planning my tattoo for a couple years now too. My idea is that the years from being a teen to becoming an adult are the years that will shape your life. Being as this is you also will change you views on things during these years. If one thing is constant through out these years as your tattoo design is then go with it. You wont end up regretting it if it was the only consistent thing in the years of change. It's part of who and what you are.

if you aren't 100% sure then you should wait. i too wanted a tattoo from about the same age as you. however on my 18th birthday i went out and got a tattoo. it has since beencovered up. but i am now 26 and love all of the tattoos that i have and definitely have plans for more. BUT i have definitely realized the importance of artist quality and design choice. so if you're not sure yet then you should just wait.

If you've been contemplating it this long, maybe you should take it a step further and make a consultation appointment with an artist at a shop. The artist will be able to point you in the right direction, tell you what works and what won't. That should give you more to think on before you take the plunge.
PS-
the knee sucks! but it's so worth it!

This is my philosophy on tattoo's-
If you get one that your happy with now, accept it like its a birthmark, its going to be on your body forever and thats life. Hopefully you will be able to appreciate why you got it done in the first place.
There's no point going through life full of regrets.
If you really want it, get it done, dont dwell on it for 12 years!

yeah i was the same way..i wanted a tattoo since i was 14..i got one for my 16th birthday..it was awesome and i still love it. i think if you want it then you should just go for it...your 26..your more then capable of finding a tattoo you know will suit you and one you know you will never lose interest for. its a thrilling experience to have in life...i think everyone should go through it at least once. (if they want too of course) so my advise...just go for it..you only live once.

I think its okay to get tattoos so long as:
-you are sober
-its meaningful to you
-you pick a good artist
-you take care of it (both right when you get it and in the future if it needs touch ups)

my opinion is that you can make it, but you should different place. why? because maybe you will apply for a job in a skirt, serious companies might reject you.
also i want to tell you that i have to small size tatoos, in places easy to hide, what i mean, i don't see them anymore because i forgot about them, so i also don't enjoy them anymore. one i have since 9 , and second since 8 years.

You have been thinking about it for twelve years and know what you want. I think you are ready. Just make sure you're absolutely positive that it's what you want. Good luck!
