A Boston firefighter is mending from what could have been deadly stab wounds he suffered early yesterday morning when he was allegedly jumped in East Boston while off duty by a group of Hispanic males who told him they "don't want any gringo here."

Though police are not classifying the incident as racially fueled, the Boston Police Department's Community Disorders Unit is investigating. The 32-year-old jake, whose name officials were not releasing, is white.

Ironically, the firefighter's life was likely saved because he sought refuge from his alleged assailants at Engine 5 on Saratoga Street - the station house he's assigned to.

"Fortunately, those firefighters were not out on a call," said Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald.

MacDonald said the firefighter had gone to Chivas Restaurant in Day Square to grab takeout when "six guys started exchanging words with him. He indicated he was just there to get a sandwich and that he was a firefighter. They pushed him."

Hoping to avoid a confrontation, MacDonald said the firefighter got into his car and headed for his station for safety's sake, but the pack followed him on foot. It was shortly before 2:45 a.m.

"As soon as he got out of his car, six guys jumped him and started kicking and punching him," MacDonald said. "He felt two sharp pains in his chest and knew he had been stabbed."

The firefighter summoned the help of fellow jakes by ringing the station doorbell and his alleged attackers fled. MacDonald said his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

"He's more upset about the fact that he's going to miss several shifts," MacDonald

I guess it's not a hate crime unless committed by a white person. Other races, apparently, are too stupid to know any better. LMAO at the state of affairs liberals have created in this country.

It is a hate crime....though I don't agree with the terminology of depicting any crime against a human as more horendous than another just because it was done across racial lines....who cares who commits the crime against whom...it was a crime that should be prosecuted to the fullest extent.

I taught school for ten years in a district that I attended as a child. The district happened to be about 60% or more black. Do you know how many students I taught that didn't think a black person could be prejudice? And in the next breath would make fun of someone of Asian decent....It was pretty ridiculous but as someone else on this forum stated that is what we can expect from the liberals that run the media and congress these days. I personally am tired of making excuses for being white...(actually I've never done that) but I am tired of others thinking I should.

I live in the Chicagoland area now and its so politically correct here now that when a neighbor saw a black woman sitting in an SUV on our streets very early in the morning with no apparent reason to be there she refused to call the police...now just two days before hand my house three doors down was burglurized by a black male (that an elderly neighbor saw trying to break into her house)...She told me she knew she should have called because we only have one black family in our lonely neighborhood in the middle of nowhere and she wasn't one of the members of that family....but she was afraid of looking like a racist.

It has gone too far in this country. Hate crimes???? It's crime against humans...who cares about the color of the victims or the assailants. ARen't all crimes bases on some sort of hate or prejudice....I'm thinking that young man broke into our house because he figured we could afford it and probably didn't deserve what we had anyway....Funny that he robbed what he thought was a white family...he didn't know my husband is a Puerto Rican who has worked very hard to get where he is today.

It's all just pretty ridiculous all the way around. I hope that the firefighter doesn't get bitter and decide to quit public service.

They use the description of "group of Hispanic males" and that means Mexican and illegal.
In this report it says "The victim, already in an ambulance, told them he had gone to Chivas Restaurant, where a group of what he thought were Hispanic men."

Although your post states that "police are not classifying the incident as racially fueled" a percentage of the answers here are positive it is. I, as well as anyone here can not truly say what exchange took place between these people to result in a stabbing.
As to whether he knew he had been stabbed or not yours states he knew and this states that "The firefighter told police he did not realize he was stabbed until after the scuffle."

What I have trouble with is their near beginning of "could have been deadly stab wounds" and the near end of "with non-life threatening injuries", I guess wording means a lot.
When I think of the fact they followed him on foot (your link), I couldn't help but wonder how. It turns out Chivas Restaurant and fire station 5 are about a one minute drive,

If this unidentified fire fighter was armed it would have heighten the possibilities of more than one body laying on the ground, included his own.
I can't help but to think was going to the station he was assigned to a thought in his mind of being able to even the odds? It has been said, we protect our own. What was his part in this, it is possible he had the first words or action in the starting of this.
I would think that most people once in their car and being followed by a group of pepole looking to do them harm would drive far and fast.
In no way am I saying that the victim or this group was right or wrong in what they did. I do not know, I have questions and wonder about some of the facts reported.
Saying that, we know a newspaper or newsreporter will build or enhance a story line with words and inflection of what is being said. What is said and what was said usually don't match.

They were probably afraid that the firefighter would call ICE and have them arrested. Those illegal aliens will fight if you try to deport them. Many Hispanics along with blacks are racists and hate white people, but according to them, only white people can be racist. Doesn't La Raza mean, the Race?

From "State of Emergency," by Patrick Buchanan:
A Grudge Against the Gringo
When 500,000 Hispanics massed in downtown Los Angeles in the spring of 2006 to protest any congressional bill to secure America’s borders or send illegal aliens back, Americans could have seen a close-up of their rising radicalism had not the Los Angeles Times and local TV covered it up.
Slate writer Mickey Kaus, who attended the L.A. demonstration, called the Times’s coverage “propagandistic.” Columnist Michelle Malkin wrote on what went largely unreported:
Demonstrators gleefully defaced photos of President Bush and urged supporters to “Stop the Nazis!” Los Angeles talk host Tammy Bruce reported that protesters burned American flags and waved placards of the North American continent with America crossed out...

It is a hate and "gang" crime. Hate crime because the firefighter is white. Gang crime because he was attacked by more than one person. At least it would be in my state where my answer here would be backed up by our local police chief, and investigative detective who are active in, and follow up on these kinds of cases.

All of this stuff is out of control! Why are other races allowed to call white people anything they want and it's supposed to be ok? Why would a group of Hispanics from any nation be allowed to call him gringo and it's not a racially motivated crime? This was a guy who puts his life on the line daily to fight fires for any race in trouble but they can try to kill him and it's just an incident? All of this PC crap is going to get a lot of people killed! I'm so tired of these gangs, it's time to put them away and use labor camps to pay for their keep!

If you're from Boston, you know why.
Eastie, Lynn and other cities are havens for El Salvadoran gangs whose members get arrested for some violent crime, get deported and then magically reappear back in Easite or Lynn, etc....and then get arrested, deported and come back.

But I do take some hope form this story - sounds like they said all that in English!

HISPANCIS = MEXICANS? and "he got in his car and headed for his station and they followed on foot. Either he has a very slow car or they have very fast feet. i am sure he did not have a cell phone to call his fellow firefighters to let them know he was being followed by some guys on foot. the story would have been better if he said they beat him to the fire station, were there waiting for him and they made false alarm call to get his fellow firefighters out of the station so they could beat and stab him there. but no he summons help by ringing the door bell not honking his horn like crazy to draw attention that he is about to have a problem outside the firehouse with 6 guys that followed him on foot. at shortly after 2:45 a.m maybe he got into a problem at a bar and just made up all this stuff.

This qualifies as a 'Hate' crime.

Many Americans find the word 'gringo' as offensive as the dreaded 'N' word.

I'll bet nothing substantial happens to the assailants.
