No. 1080i has more than twice as many pixels on the screen. More pixels is always better, no matter what people tell you.

I think 720p is better for fast action because the screen redraws faster. Like maybe a bunch of birds all taking off at the same time.

But for most viewing, including most sports, 1080i is superior. It displays things in finer detail.

I have an old tube type HDTV that is very good at displaying both resolutions, and the 1080i shows always look much crisper and richer.

Without making a long drawn out answer with a ton of numbers thrown at you... No 720p is not better.
