I have done both. I was also informed that being deaf, singing in the choir was probably not the best position in the church for me. So they gave me the 4-5 year olds to teach, which I have done for over 20 years.

I taught the children's liturgy. In Catholic mass the children leave the main area to a smaller room where they are taught the same scriptures but in ways for kids so that the adults can listen to the scriptures without keeping the kids calm for twenty minutes. They get crayons and do crafts and such to buy time.
Singing I have done because I don't like to kneel and pray and all that stuff. It doesn't feel like a connection. But singing in the choir is my way of praying.

Both. Now I'm married to the Teaching Elder (affectionately known to all as "Rabbi" Randy) of a house based congregation - where everyone is a "choir member" and the kids are taught right along side the adults
