Well, if you read Jesus’ admonishment to not judge, in context, then you will see he DIDN’T mean don’t make any assessments of anyone, at any time, for any reason. No what he meant, from the most obvious contextual reading, is that we should not judge sanctimoniously. In other words, we should not seat ourselves in a position of judgment based on the notion that we are so much better than those we judge, because we all have our own share of moral shortcomings. Jesus was accepting, and even demanded, that his followers use their powers of judgment to examine future false messiahs that will come to teach in his name. He was adamant that his disciples judge and call people religious hypocrites if they truly are, just as he did with the Pharisees. He asked his Apostles to judge a man’s heart when converting him to his newly founded religion. So Christians giving a thumbs down, doesn’t in any sense violate Jesus’ mandate not to judge with an air of self-righteousness.

The true reason, that I have observed, as to why most Christians (not all) give answers a thumbs down, is because they are either offended by them, or simply refuse to give credit to well written cogent answers, just because they disagree with their point of view. To me their willingness to discredit any answer with the thumbs down designation, without taking into account how well argued that position is, is in of itself attributable to their childishness. Speaking for myself, if a Christian gives me a well articulated argument, I will give him a thumbs up for being considerate enough to imbue his prose with substance, even though I might disagree with him. The Christian’s unwillingness to reciprocate this courtesy is indicative of their insecurity and of their irrational disdain for anyone who happens to disagree with them.

The Bible says, "Judge not, lest you be judged." People should never presume to make judgments reserved for God, but they are told to be wise and make good choices. Sometimes a "thumbs down" is a good choice. Don't worry, Christians don't think the "thumbs down" button sends you to hell! And we do remember that we can get "thumbs down", too!

P.S. Good Question! Thumbs up!

First, I only thumbs-down answers for these reasons:
1. If the answer is rude, insulting, or gratuitously vulgar.
2. If the person uses fallacies in their argument. Yeah, the Horus=Jesus myth? THUMBS DOWN.

But somehow I don't think that when Jesus told us not to judge that He was referring to giving thumbs-down on Yahoo! Answers.

You are quite wrong:

John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

If someone gives an answer that is wrong and not in compliance with scripture, it is proper to let it be known.

What Christians are not to do is make condemnative judgments against others.

The bible is full of contradictions isn't it? The older you get the more you notice that some of the biggest liars, cheaters, snobs etc. go to church to ask for forgiveness because they know no one else will. Some of them are so phoney. Then again, there are those who really are trying to do the right thing. I don't think its just christians. I think you'll find the phoneys everywhere. Hey! They fly planes into buildings in one particular religion to teach us bad westerners don't they? They have judged a whole continent without knowing anyone.

Why do atheists thumb down Christian answers?

It's a matter of opinion on here, not damnation.

because they choose not to believe in their God anymore and worship a being that wants to be worshipped ,the jealous god ,the punnisher, the one that threaten his followers with burning in hell for all eternity.while the true creator who sent his son Jesus to save the people are dismissed by them as the devil, but they talk about Jesus all the time, without knowing who he realy is.90% of so called christians are judges, while Jesus said you shall not judge.but it is written in the bible, that the true worship and evil will walk hand in hand.

thank YAHWEH that he opened my eyes to christianity,to see them for what they realy are Jesus warned his followers not to use their sourdough

It's not a judgment as much as it is an expression that we disagree with someone's interpretation, answer, or opinion.
