Brief review of story: It involves a father who has two sons. He decides to give them their inheritance and one son stays and works the fields and the other takes off and blows all his money. Upon being destitute, and being shamed to be so cause he thought his father would reject him, he returns home. Upon his arrival, the father showers love upon him and gives him a great feast. The one who stayed and worked asked why the other was given the fat calf for dinner when he had stayed and worked so hard. The father then said because this was my son who was lost and returned to me (paraphrase).

The significance is that the religious stay with the religion and work and put their faith in receiving the ultimate reward of heaven. The one who leaves is the person who strays from faith and is afraid God will not forgiven him for his sins and his lack of faith. The message is to show that God will take in any who return with love and the reward they deserve. Swallowing your pride to return is difficult, it means that you don't know everything and that you have made bad choices and that God will know all about them and you have to face that. But God will not turn you away and will not treat you badly for that but instead will welcome you back as a prodigal son.

There is a song about this parable called "When God Ran." If you think about the story, God is the Father of the prodigal, which symbolizes those who have turned away from God..or those who have not accepted Jesus and have chosen to live ways which are not God's ways. The prodigal returned home....while he was gone, the Father kept watching for him When the son returned the Father saw him in the distance and RAN to him. Now in that culture, to say the Father ran, went against the grain as it would have been shameful for the Father to run to the wicked son (the sinner). The father in that culture should have disowned his son and should have told him he did not know him when the son returned. But God's love is so great that He reaches out to all who are lost and when they come to Him, He freely offers mercy and grace. This goes completely against the grain of society in general.
If you think about it, the son wanted his inheritance. he couldn't wait for his father to die.he did not care about his father at all. So, God the Father let him have his way. When the son realized how horrible life is separated from the father, he returned home willing to be a slave...but instead, he was brought back into the family and there was a party! so it is with God. thru faith in Jesus....we can all receive this mercy and grace. All we have to do is repent and turn to Jesus. Hope this helped a little.

The story is about two brothers, one a hard worker and the other a waster. The waster can`t wait for the old man to die and wants his inheritance now..
Having got it he goes off to se the world, until it runs out. Then he has to work for a living.
The only job he could get was tending pigs. Note tending pigs was concidered beneath any Jew, so that gives you an idea of how despairate this guy was he was actually eating the pig food.
So he swallows his pride and heads for home to say sorry, and ask his father for a job.
So he goes home and the father greets him with open arms and calls for a feast to celebrate his return.
The other son is angry over the killing of the fatted calf and the feast for his brother who had squandered a fortune on protitutes and drink. His father comes out to him and tells him everything he owns is his , but his brother was dead and now lives was gone and now returned.
Thats the jist of the story in Luke15:11-32.

As an atheist I can`t tell you what this has to do with a god or even justice..!!

the parable involes a rich man and his son to whom he gave his inheritance to. The son went away a lost it all and eventually ends up as a slave. He goes back to his father ashamed of all the wrong he has done and ask for his fathers forgiviness and offers to work as a slave in his fathers house. But the father refuses and takes in his son a his heir. It is a story of repentance and how we do God. We take his favors and waste them on the world but he wants us to know when we sincerly give that up and come back to him sorry that he will always take us back. God's love is unconditional.

The story is about a father with 2 sons-- one does as he is suppose to & one goes astray-- as you know when the prod., son returns his father rejoices and is ready to celebrate-
This us and God- some of us will do as expected and some will stray... if those that stray come back home God is very happy that his child has returned.
Sounds like you are doing a research paper..??

In addition to prayerful reading of this passage, a book that is really good is "The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming " by Henri J. M. Nouwen

Simply, We are the Prodigal Son. God is not angry and all we have to do is surrender our need to suffer in servitude, and simply return to the Father's House and find a celebration, where we imagined all kinds of illusions....

Why don't you just read the parable in your Bible. It's pretty clear what is going on in the story.
