If your having a family style dinner I like your second and third options. Cupcakes are a big thing lately but does that fit into your theme? If it doesn't then do the separate smaller versions of the cake. This means however that you are more then likely going to have LOTS of cake leftover. Try making a cake that will feed only the people at the tables no bigger so that will cut down on the excess of cake.

Ok I didn't answer this question at first b/c like everyone else I agreed the smaller cakes for each table was better--looked better and goes with the theme better.
HOWEVER now that I know that a huge percentage of your guests will be children, I think cupcakes might be a better idea. After all, kids love cupcakes and it is much easier for them to handle. I don't know how cost plays in. If it would be possible to do the family style cakes for adults and cupcakes for the kids.
But depending on the age of the kids, cupcakes are easier for parents to help them with.
BTW Spice cake with cream cheese frosting. YUMMY!! I want some.

I am a traditionalist so I prefer the big ole cake! I'd just make the tiers bigger and have them served from that. As for the person who said it is hard to cut a tiered cake, that's because they don't know how. Here's a page with tips on how to cut for catering. (It's not my site but it sure is helpful) http://cateritsimple.com/_wsn/page19.html
Ask the baker how many servings a tier will give you. This page has the amt. a cake will serve. http://www.earlenescakes.com/ckserchart.htm
Just a word of advice - you are going to need more cake if you serve smaller cakes to each table. That means the people at the table will cut the cake and they will only get about 8-16 servings out of a 9" b/c they don't know how to cut it. (most people cut a cake like you would cut a round pizza)

Oh yum, that cake sounds so good...reminds me of a carrot cake but better since it's spice!! I like the idea of keeping the the family style serving and having mini cakes on each table. My second choice would be the cupcakes because that would still reflect the family style you're going for.

I don't think that cupcakes quite fit into your medieval theme. I really like the idea of smaller cakes delivered to each table.

I like the idea of the smaller versions delivered to each table. That way, it keeps up the family style but isn't so hard to manage.

i really like the idea of the smaller version for each table, what a beautiful centerpiece that will make! it sounds marvelous. if there are going to be children at the reception what about getting your baker to also make enough cupcakes that the kids will each have their own 'wedding' cake on their plates? the kids would love that! have fun!

OK well I think that you should only have one cake and just make it bigger and enough for ever one to get a slice. Or if you dont like that Idea I woluld do cupcakes but not a look alike cake at the tables. There is to be one wedding cake and one that is. Make you cake that you are cutting the only one and make it mind blowing....

I like having the smaller cakes delivered to the table, Have the bakery make them only one tier and big enough to serve everyone at the table. the multiple tier cakes are harder to cut and serve.

easier to transport smaller version and would be fine; I am really starting to like the idea of dessert at the tables and just a smaller cake for the bride and groom to cut etc ; makes sense , less waste , cost etc
