Because a lot of people are saying that you can't condemn a movie w/o watching it... But its based on a book. So, Have you read the books?

FYI: I have read all three books, AND I am a pretty good Christian. I don't need lecturing about how bad it is, I know. But to be honest, the first book isn't really that bad. I'll assume that the first movie is pretty good and fun, so that kids will like it and they will go to see the second and third movie, which are very bad.

So, have you read it or even heard of the book?

I just finished the trilogy several weeks ago and I can say that much of what the protestors are saying isn't quite true. Yes, the series does encourage its readers to question authority and antiquity, and yes there is talk in the book about killing God (the Authority), but The Golden Compass (the first of the three) really doesn't really touch on the aspect of gods or the afterlife. That comes in book two and three. The Golden Compass is more about what the golden compass is, what daemons are, and how everything is connected. I think the protestors are afraid that their kids will see the movie and want to pick up the books, thereby learning that the Christian Church in the books' world(s) is responsible for a great deal of manipulation and abusive of power throughout time. Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think most history textbooks reveal the same information. The only difference being that in this series of books, the story's protagonist isn't among the Church's "heroes". I think if parents are that concerned, they should read the story WITH their children so they can explain concepts to them.

Honestly, this book doesn't scream out "Be an atheist!!". The whole idea of having external souls was beautifully done with the daemons. Now I want to see my own daemon! I loved the series and know my kids will.

I have read all 3 books and really liked them. I've read them first about 6 years ago, and reread them a few times. I am not going to watch the movie because movies never are as good as the books.
Anybody who complains now about the movie should examine their reading habits. The books been around for more than 10 years (the first one was published 1995). If a book doesn't upset anybody for more than 10 years there is absolutely no reason why it suddenly becomes evil, just because they make it into a movie. Or people should read more.

I gained an e mail with regard to the movie popping out in time for the Christmas season this 3 hundred and sixty 5 days, that blanketed that link. Scopes is often stable, so i might evaluate it. Philip Pullman thinks The Chronicles of Narnia are undesirable for toddlers and that C.S. Lewis improve into the main threatening of all English writers?!? i do no longer care how stable the tale, if it is an attack on Christianity and it is approximately scuffling with God, i choose no component of it. My advice to you, for the reason which you have already given your son those books: study it with him and talk the recommendations being presented. in case you go with to bypass extra suitable, when you study this series jointly, study The Chronicles of Narnia series with him, too. Then talk the recommendations presented in C.S. Lewis' books with him. this way you will by no ability be depriving him of examining books he's appeared forward to examining, yet you would be waiting to coach him what you have self belief to be good and incorrect and clarify any faults you detect. historic previous is replete with men who use the very expertise God has given them to combat Him. They have not gained yet; nor will they! i would not worry approximately it, if I have been you. God is actual greater than a e book....even a set or a movie! permit me emphasize: study IT WITH HIM!!! BTW: I merely remembered some thing. Years in the past I study that Voltaire pronounced that throughout a hundred years the Bible may well be extinct. A a hundred years later, the main important Bible publishing business business enterprise interior the international improve into being run from what improve into as quickly as Voltaire's belongings. communicate with regard to the final chortle... BTW2: As a Christian, i don't have a situation with the Harry Potter series. I in uncomplicated terms have a situation with books that push an anti-Christ theology.

Yes, I've read all three. I enjoyed all three. I don't have to agree with the philosophy or religion of an author to enjoy his work. The books are fiction. As long as the kids understand the difference between fiction and fact, I can't see the books or the movies doing any harm.

Not yet, but with all the crap being said about them, I most certainly will!!

Why is it so difficult for christian groups to let the rest of us be entertained by a work of fiction? After all, we let them be entertained by the bible and I really can't see much of a difference.....except that maybe the Golden Compass is a tad bit more realistic.

I've read the books and I think they are awesome! I'm not a Christian and I don't think they are anti-christian at all like some people claim they are. They are definately anti-clerical though.
I detected a very spiritual theme thoughout the series (you will have to read to find out--I'll not spoil it here and I woudn't do justice anyway)

Love, Love, LOVE those books. I've probably re-read the series about 8-9 times since I was 12... and have gained a little more from them each time.

I'm glad there's at least one Christian on Y!A who's read the books and made up their own mind about it, instead of the majority who have been parroting misinformation about it. *applause to you*

Yeah, I read the series as a christian and as an atheist. Personally, I do not allow fictional books, especially not fantasy ones, to affect my beliefs or lack thereof.

No, I haven't, but am interested in doing so because of the media controversary of the movie, "The Golden Compass." They (media) are making such a big to-do about it being anti-Christian, I'm curious to see what it's all about.

No I didn't, until all of the hype started up.

I'm going to buy it and read it before I see the movie.
