Hey Buddhas Bro, most people do not give respect to body builders because they don't understand the sport of body building. Like any other sport, it takes dedication to get the build like these guys and girls. I was never a body builder, but I was a power lifter when I was younger. I truly enjoyed lifting heavy weights. I also loved to compete. But like every thing else, there is always going to be someone that is jealous and can't handle the sport and will insult the sport every chance they get. What I am curious about, is how many of the folks that gave insulting answers to this question will have the brass marbles to tell a body builder to his face what they think. I think not many, because most of them would get their face caved in.
P.S. To rooster---Does society need your smart ***?---I think not!

hmmm, good question why not? Well some just don't like that fact that some use drugs to achieve the goal that they want or need to to stay cometitive on the stage. But, it's a catch 22 they boo the sport for the use of drugs like steroids but continue to buy the products and mags that keep the image of the bodybuilder alive. Look at where bodybuilding has gone in the past 30 years. yes steroid use has gone up but so has the sale of products such as protein powders.
Should a bodybuilder get respect??..... Yes i would say so, I have been all natural for years and have friends that used drugs to get to the stage. I don't fault them that's just the world they have gone into. The work and dedication to compete in this sport is very much like any sport.

Competitive bodybuilding from amateur level and right up to the top is a sport totally dependent on immense steroid use. I think that is why bodybuilding may be falling short when it comes to earning respect in sporting circles. Privately I'm sure most bodybuilders can admit that to themselves even if they don't like to say it out loud.

If I wanted to look like a bodybuilder I may have some respect for them, but I don't want an exaggerated body mass.

I'm not having a go at you, but why would you respect a bodybuilder? do you mean respect for the work and dedication they put in when they become obsessed with the perfect body? i knew two who nearly destroyed all they had in this pursuit, so I'm not overly keen on it , stay fit but keep it real, do not mean to cause any offence, but i had a very negative experience of it. best of luck to you.

Bodybuilders should be drug tested at every event, and spot checked in between competitions, and the same with pro football!
Then I would respect them.

My experience with them is that they are self-absorbed and narcissistic. I asked a couple I worked with to help on a couple of local Habitat for Humanity projects and heard nothing but excuses from them about why they couldn't. Who showed up? Our other coworkers who ranged from totally out of shape to moderately fit, including a guy recovering from a stroke who only had the use of one arm. And they stayed to finish the job. Respect is earned from one's service to others, not service to vanity.
