I am very interested in the subject and am wondering what it is and why is it happening. Is there a way to stop it? what chemicals are used?

Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.

Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.

It won't be a Hollywood movie style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.

Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.

Really good website for more information here:

Lots of numerical scientific data proving it real here:

Proof that most scientists think it's real and mostly caused by us here:

We can't stop in entirely - that's too hard. But by reducing the use of fossil fuels, and some other things, we can slow it down enough to avoid disaster. Here's the plan:

Historically, we are not even close to as warm as it got in the early 1800's. If you check into historical records you will find out that whalers were able to sail deep into the Arctic Ocean in pursuit of their prey. When temps returned to normal after two decades of "global warming" the whalers were caught unawares and many perished being trapped in the ice late in the season.

This is not the only historical circumstance. A reading of any well founded history book that looks at weather's affects on human events shows fluctuations far more extreme than what we have today.

The fact is that a single volcano can spew more greenhouse gasses into the air than all of humanity combined. The "El Nino" phenomena was based entirely on volcanic activity in the Philippines, for example.

Present theories about global warming are based on very small amounts of data collected in only the last hundred or so years. Hardly enough upon which to base a judgement.

Further, if you look at the trend of modern technology, it has the general effect of moderating the introduction of so called greenhouse gasses into the air as we find more efficient ways to produce products and transport them. The fact is that going back to the horse and buggy days would create MORE "greenhouse" gasses than are currently being produced, merely from the carbon dioxide and methane created from the emissions from horses!

Don't you think that it is more likely that the scientists who espouse this theory of global warming (by no means a majority of those polled) might in fact be mistaken? The planet has the ability to maintain equilibrium from the creation of carbon dioxide, merely through the respiration of plants. More carbon monoxide creates more "breathable" air for plants. Which creates more lush growth, which, in turn, converts more oxygen and reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Please, please, please, do more research on this matter and you will see that the whole "global warming" movement is not based on sound data, but is mere conjecture by groups that just might have some other political motivations behind their advocacy.

Global warming is a natural phenomenon which occurs on 1500 year cycle and is caused by output from the sun. The only way to stop it is to put out the sun. This is the same answer for Global cooling which occurs during the other 1500 year periods.

Global warming means that the average temperature, considering the entire earth, is warming.

There has been NO warming in the past several years. It was warmer 50 - 70 years ago.

Global warming is a cyclical event, every 1500 years.

To think that man has caused it or can reverse it is arrogant.

Everything is predicted to be doomed. And the cause is always the evil "global warming".

Trust me, it will never happen. Doomsayers always are predicting the end of days. Their goal is to scare you and make you feel bad.

Take the emotion out of the debate, and they have nothing.

You will have to view both sides of this story - then apply logic to see which side appears to have validity.
If you are of the belief that man can control nature - then you would tend to believe the Alarmist viewpoint.
If you study the power of nature you should realize man's insignificance in comparison.
Here is a good web page to reason through:

Think about how little the effect warmer air can have on ice in comparison to warmer water has on the 90% of the ice below the water line. Do you see the logic?
