Is belief in Smith's account as crucial to a Mormon as belief in Jesus is to more mainstream christians?

Uh- Yeah. Why Wouldn't we?
Edit**
Yes belief in what Joseph Smith says he saw, belief in his revelations are vital to being a Mormon. We DO NOT Worship Joseph, we worship Jesus Christ. But if Joseph was a fraud, if he did not really see God the Father, and his son Jesus Christ. If he did not really translate the Gold plates, if he did not have the revelations that he claims to have had, then the basic doctrine of this church is also false. So yes a belief in his works and in the things he said were from God are vital to a belief in Mormonism. God the Father is our Maker, we worship him and his son Jesus Christ. We believe that Jesus is the head of our church. We revere our prophets, and believe that they have authority from God to act in His name.
Just like Most mainstream Christians don't worship Moses or Adam, they view them as prophets who were called to lead the people. This is how we feel about our Prophets and about Joseph Smith. I guess a Belief in Joseph Smith is as Crucial to Mormon as a belief in Noah is to all other Christians.

Yes, Mormons do believe that the angel Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith, just as the angel Gabriel appeared to the virgin Mary. However, I will say that my testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ is much more important than my testimony of the calling of Joseph Smith.

Yes. Without that truth, then the rest of the story wouldn't be right. Since most of us in the church have had a personal confirmation of what we feel to be truth, I'm sure they will tell you that we have to believe this to believe the rest.
Do I believe that Moroni visited Joseph as an angel? Yes. Do I believe that he helped Joseph with the Book of Mormon? Yes. Do I believe Moroni was a prophet who wrote part of and abridged the Book of Mormon? Yes.
*EDIT**
Is this as important as my belief in Christ? No. Christ is the center of my faith. Without Him, the rest of it wouldn't be possible. I think we all have to have faith in Christ before faith in Joseph Smith and his story. Without a faith in Christ, the rest would be a moot point.

To me it is just background information. I already had a belief in Christ. When I learned about the principles of the restored Gospel, it fit together with other things I knew.

Jesus Christ is central in our religion. However, we believe that Moroni, as an angel, delivered information which restored the gospel to it's fullness as Christ taught it and had intended it to be taught. We believe that man had corrupted and misinterpreted many of His teachings.

Yes, if Joseph Smith's story wasn't true, then he was the biggest con man in the history of the world. So faith in his story of the revelations and the restoration of the truth is crucial to LDS members.
