To be the best person I can be. Live without regret. Love and be loved. I want to help people become happier people.
Also to be a good person because I want to be. Not because some book tells me I need to or I will burn in hell.

My goal in life is to live a long, happy, rewarding and fulfilling life with my wife. My goals also include continuing my education and learning wherever I go.
Where am I headed ultimately? Well, we're ALL ultimately headed for the grave, be you religious or not.
Meaning and purpose in life? I'm not sure why, but Christians seem to think you can't have either unless you are a Christian, which is hogwash and dogma.
The meaning and purpose of life is what you make of it. MY meaning and purpose is to love my wife, respect our lives together, learn about anything I can, scuba dive a lot and explore our oceans, read a thousand more books, laugh and be appreciative of what I have and open and run my own company.
No god needed.

I think most "Christians" think that atheists are hate filled people who care about nothing because they have nothing to live for if there is no afterlife. But there is all to live for if there is no afterlife. Right? Because this life is all you have. This moment in time is all you have. But when it comes down to it, we are all still humans who all want the same things, driven by the same desires and impulses. Peace of mind basically. I think that this yahoo question and the answers show that don’t you think?
However, I think there is one main difference.
A "Christian" will be driven by the desire to be saved, to live forever. They will forgo his earthly pleasures and be a "good" person and they expect to be rewarded by eternal happiness in heaven. Most "Christians" today miss the point and are "in it" for selfish reasons. (Not all are this type of Christian of course)
I believe an Atheist is filling the same human need out of his rejection and subsequent world view that a Christian does by his acceptance of God and his subsequent view. I tend to think though that Atheist as a whole are happier because their view makes it impossible to not focus on the moment. If you could die the next minute and that's it forever, you sure better enjoy this moment right now right? Whereas a Christian is more concerned with being "good" this moment so that if he dies he gets his reward. That’s a little more worrying and hence a bit more unhappiness. Is one right and the other wrong? HA that’s a completely different discussion now isn’t it?

I have a couple of goals - to record an album, to write a book, establish a successful business, and if I have enough money and resources I may try to get a patent on an invention.
However, those are goals, not a purpose. I do not believe in a higher purpose or some grand meaning to life other than to feel - to experience the sensual pleasures - the touch of a loved one, the scent of a rose, the sound of a string quartet, and so on. Those are the things that make life worth living. Without feelings - without sensual pleasures - there is no reason to live.

I probably have similar goals that you do. You know, start a family, buy a house etc. I give meaning to my life, the same as you give meaning to yours. We just take different routes.
The difference is that I'm not living my life for what may or may not happen when I'm dead. I'm living for today. We know that today exists, but nobody can say what will happen tomorrow... or when we are dead
What if you discovered that heaven and hell don't exist? Would you still worship your god then? Ask yourself this and you'll hit on the main reason you probably believe in the first place - Fear of punishment and hope for a reward, That's no way to live your life - on your knees, fearful and supplicant...

Like everyone meaning and purpose is what we make it. Perhaps you've made it a religion. That's fine if that's what you want.
For me I try to live every day with the knowledge that as far as any human has ever known this is the one chance we get and we're gone. This life is the most precious thing we have.
For me...
Do everything at least once. Sweep your own porch. Don't dwell on the negatives. Help others when possible and don't tell anyone what their meaning and purpose should be.

Like every other living thing I'm ultimately headed for death.
What I have to decide is what best to do with my time until then to maximize my own satisfaction and that of those around me.
I have no more trouble accepting that I will not exist after I die than I have accepting that I did not exist until I was conceived and developed to a certain point.
I am continuously amazed at how many people seem incapable of accepting that.

What is the goal of any human.... are christians so broken that they can not see that humans have goals and purposes beyond religion.... We are diverse, each one of us serve a purpose in our cultures and societies... if we were all the same nothing would get done... societies evolved with enough needs to give each of it's people purpose.....

To some way make life better for the next generation. I question death not being final, as no religious leader is in a hurry to get there.
