There are a lot of uses but it depends on how & how often u r gonna fast. Well, u can get rid of any acidity or gastric problems, u can reduce fat, usually the toxic level in ur body comes down when u fast. U can overcome addictions such as tobacco, alcohol or any other addictions if u have. These are just a few.....

Fasting can 'clear your body' of the toxins in it, but you should NEVER fast to 'lose weight' and you should be into 'deep meditation' BEFORE you fast. Never fast totally ... drink 'clear fruit juices' and water. You can't smoke or take ANY pills because both of those will make you EXTREMELY ILL. Never fast for fewer than 7 days, or more than 30 days at a time. IF you decide to 'fast' you'll find that after the first week, you brain is much faster and you'll be able to 'think better' ... but watch out if you fast for 30 days ... break your fast with RICE as the main food you eat for your first meal, or you will get TERRIBLE diarrhea ... I know, I broke with 'barley soup' and sat on the toilet for 15 straight hours after I took my first 30 day fast!

For religious purposes, the goal of fasting as I understand is to help focus your mind and get you more in touch with the part of you (and your connection with G-d) that is not tangible. But with regards to a diet... a fast is honestly the worst thing for your body. Eating less than usual will shrink your stomach a bit so that you are less hungry in the near future. But complete fasting will, if anything, slow down your metabolism, and you'll probably eat more than is necessary (binge) when you end the "fast"

People do fastings for various reasons, one being of religious & spiritual beliefs, medical reasons, detoxification, and for dropping weight. however I believe it's a personal belief in the results each individual recieves. Detoxification is done naturally by the body by various organs, including kidneys and liver. Religious fasting is a personal choice with very personal results. Fasting for weightloss is extremely unhealthy and only temporary, rather than losing fat we often lose muscle, which in the end proves fasting is not the way to go. In fact making healthier food choices would create weightloss with lasting results....

Some do it as a religious thing - for spiritual purification. The North American natives used to do it while on a 'spirit-quest' - a coming-of-age ritual where the young men would fast and go off into the wilderness until they met their 'spirit guide'.
Some people do it for cleansing of the body - purging of toxins and/or parasites.
Some do it for weight-loss - although this is not recommended.

It is used to detox your body. The reason people do it is because we are exposed to so much junk in the environment and our food that our body is no longer fully equipped to keep up.
If you are seriously thinking about fasting I recommend you do a ton of research first. Start slowly. Don't just wake up tomorrow and decide to stop eating. You will make yourself sick.

It depends. Some reasons are religious. For instance, at times, people will give up a certain thing that they depend on, such as food, in order to get closer to God, or a higher being, and to focus on them.
