Many ignorants translate "Linga" as penis which is Wrong and this myth is spread by missionaries

The Linga has different meanings - shapeless, without organs, long drum like, etc

penis is called linga by some people due to its shape...the actual world for penis is "Shishna"

Shiva Linga here means, Shiva without form... it is like when we die our soul is called "Linga Sharira" now we never mean that after death we become Penis ??

Shiva being worshipped as Linga means the Consciousness in its primodal form...where Consciousness is entering into the Eternal Energy (Shakti)...the yoni.

Thus shivalinga is the state of god, just before the manifestation of Universe, a little before big bang.

Shiva is worshipped as Linga...because that is the highest of all manifested gods, formless, attributeless.... simple Consciousness and Energy (shiva and shakti)

First of all it shoud be understood that the word "Ling " does not mean the penis .It is just a stump- the lowest and thickest part of a tree that has been cut. It is not just the cricket stump that we have started calling the thin stumps of the cricket game in the later years after we invented the game.
In the oplden days people did not know how to chisel the figures of Gods much like the human beings .People have been worshipping animals and trees which they considered as life sustaining Gods. Those who have been worshipping the trees continued to do so even after the trees witherd and the thickest lower part of the tree alone remained for hundreds of years .They were just representations of the God they considered as the life force .that is Jeevan .Jeev is life and this has corrupted into shiv and shiva and siva .Similarly the feminine God , the goddesses was called "Isakki" ,or "Iyakki " or "shakthi" the one who activates , directs or gives strength. since figures like the huamn beings could not me made or unknown in the ancient times , people were worshipping the represenetations like this . if you go to the interior villages of south India , you will see such figures made of brick and worshipped as Mada swamy and issaki. yu will nt find any design , drawings or any organs like eyes ,nose mouth , ears etc to those structures .They would look like a four -sided piller with a broad base and tappering towards the top, standing vertically on the floor .when the male god that gies life Shiv is represented by the stump , the stump was named as shiva linga. Perverts and people who wanted to mock the practice referered to shiv linga as the penis of shiva. The cricket stump is also like a big penis , you don't call it a penis , The thumb and every finger can also represent the penis .So you do not call your thumb a penis .
The make the point more clear , we can refer to one instance involving Rqama.in the classic Ramayana. Befor invading srilanka , Lord Rama made a shiv linga on the sea shore of Rameswaram .and invoked his blessings for the success of his mission. That linga is called Rama Linga . Does it mean that it is the penis of Ramaand Rama worshipped his own penis ? Rama worshipped shiva linga and the linga is names Rama linga as ama worshipped that stump or linga. Since Rama made it and worshipped it it is known as Ramalinga .So the linga shaped deity is not a penis of any God and no stump represents a penis of anybody. lecherous fools and lewd persons make fun of the Hindus who worship idols by saying that shiv ling is shiva's penis .People belonging to sexual religions can not think of anything else .

The spiritual world shivlinga the worship of shiva the name of energy,Om Namah shivay,If you imagin kam then you remember shivlinga the kam will run away. The shape of our mouth is such that the mouth with the palate represents a temple and the tongue is the idol or statue in the temple. If we look at it another way, the tongue represents the male organ and the mouth the female. That is the linga of Shiva and the yoni of Shakti.
In Mantra Yoga, we create waves of sound vibrations in different parts of the mouth and tongue. As the vibrations rise, a very powerful circle of energy is created in the tongue, the area around the palette and back to the tongue. As we repeat the mantra, there is a continuous circling of energy, the intensity increasing with each round. At a certain point, the tongue and mouth fuse to become one. Shiva and Shakti have merged in a cosmic union.

By worshiping the linga we are not suggesting that God is a penis...It is what the linga symbolises. In sanscrit the word "lingam" means "something that has no form or no shape". This is then directly applicable to God because Hinduism teaches that God is formless, shapeless and cannot be measured.

The linga is the symbol of life, virility, masculinity and sexual energy. The cosmic energy which comprises what we know as "god" is fundamentally cosmic sexual energy.

Are you asking after the Shiva-Lingam?

Well, from what I'd learned of Hinduism, the Linga in the Yoni symbol is meant to depict Death as the Beginning of a New Life.

Hope this helped.

Cheers!

dear people have great misconceptions about Shiva Lina. it is actually representation of the state of zero thoughts which is attained after regular meditation. it's called Shiva ling because in that state the man comes to know the concept of actual Shiva. that day he becomes complete.

The priest class of Aryans felt that they would be starved to death!
Hence, they brought in the doctrine of "anthropromorphism" and encourage idolatory.
To enable local priests gain control over gullible locals, stories of local gods and their achievements were produced.
To drag the people who had becom eother-worldly, they

"Libido", the regenerating power was epitomised in phallic worship in terms of "linga puja"!
