for the same reasons, schools, parents, cultures like to indoctrinate kids...

they are the next generation and they need to be trained in the way they should go.

so when you see that "bebe's" kid who is throwing food at you in the restaurant and secretly want to smack him...you are wanting to "indoctrinate" him into the concept of choices and consequences...

The rest of the world does not wait till your children are 18 before pressurising them with their views and ideas, why shouldn't a parent " train up a child in the way that is best for him".
Just because you don't teach a religious idea to your children does not mean you are not influencing them. Would you wait for a child to get hit by a car before warning him of the dangers when crossing a road?

Actually we are all indoctrinated whether it's in the context of religion or atheism. We are all conditioned to behave in certain ways and to subscribe to various opinions and views. Fortunatley we are capable of understanding our circumstances and our conditioning, we can objectively look at our indoctrination and keep or dispense with any particular aspects.
Everyone naturally pass on their traditions and views. We all have a paradigm, which is a world view, which automatically influences our activities and so on. So of course our children are indctrinated with one doctrine or another, it is not only religious people who do that, everyone does it, that's life!

Parents are here to raise you, so if they go beyond that and try to change your desires and beliefs, they are being bad parents. Pushing someone to think or be some way is brainwashing, just like the military and religion...which I must say, are very similar.

Here's a nice quote about religion "he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money!"

Atleast the military doesn't hide the fact that they hate you, and will always need money because they can't perform maricles. religion just tries to hide the fact.

in the end, we all need money. we'll go to crazy limits to get it.

Because if the children grow and are allowed to choose, they may have heard alternative ideas which they prefer. Through indoctrination, the children are brainwashed into believing that there is only one path. Some escape.

So, if you had children you would not want them to adopt your values and be somewhat like you, or to give them any instruction in how to develop into an adult (at which point you could do what you want)? That would mean that you don't think your life and your values are worth passing on...most people I know don't feel like that. It ISN'T brainwashing--it's what parents do (and are supposed to do).

So we learn proper verb conjugation at an early age. This does not apply to the extremists. They prefer the opposite and instead teach their children that spelling never counts.

Indoctrinate do you mean?

Heres what the dictionary says, I think this will give you the reason:

indoctrinate
verb [ trans. ]
teach (a person or group) to accept a set of beliefs uncritically : broadcasting was a vehicle for indoctrinating the masses.
• archaic teach or instruct (someone) : he indoctrinated them in systematic theology.

I guess because you make most of the decisions about what kind of person you're going to be before you are 18. Adults are less likely to entertain new thoughts and are more set in their ways.
