I go to the YMCA daily and spend at least 20-40 minutes doing different ab workouts.
There are at least six abdomen muscles (maybe more - that's all I can think of now), so just crunches will only work a few of them.
I do different things each day & feel sore in different areas each day, so I know I'm working all of the abs.
You need a variety of crunches - forward, upward, cross to the side... leg lifts, flutters. push ups really work the abs, there are tons of excercises you can do with the big swiss ball... just too many to type up & explain.
Best bet: get a personal trainer just for a couple sessions to teach you all the different ab workouts. then practice them religiously.
Other options: , get a book with directions, or you can find anything online.

Hello,
(ANS) You can work on increasing the muscle tone in the abdominal muscle groups and in order to do this you would have to go to a gym at least x3 times a week.
Specific exercises are used to work the abdominal muscles these are:-
a) Sit up's (mainly)
b) Crunches (mainly)
c) Press up's (yes!) because this also works the upper body to as well as the stomach muscles.
d) swimming is also very good for stomach toning.
**You would be advised to warm up properly before exercising, & cooling down properly after each session.
**You cannot tone up properly if you go just once a week so be realistic here, it takes real effort and commitment & self discipline. You would need to go at least x3 hrs per week if not more. And you may not see significant results for several weeks or months.
**Train with supervision from someone who really knows how to help you condition your body properly. Avoid being locked into expensive gym memberships though, avoid personal trainers most of whom are a waste of money IMO, all you need is a pay as you go payment per session gym.
**Make sure you don't have any back problems or old back injuries before you start training though. YES! its a good idea to have a physical check up before starting to do this.
Regards Ivan
I trained many years ago at the Laban center as a professional dancer and used to train many hrs per week.

you sound tiny ... but pulling your stomach in hard, consciously trying to make it go back as close as possible to your spine, works. the best way to remember is EVERY TIME you stop at red traffic lights .. you'll then be doing it many times a day, for say ten or 20 seconds. it's the frequency of the exercise that works.
of course there are also sit ups, too, but you'll know all about those. they're boring, and you have to remember to set time aside for them.
cheers, sue
