In all seriousness, I would love to view them.

Are they at the temple in Salt Lake City?

Cuchlain: So has anyone other than Joseph Smith ever seen the golden plates then?

Look, I'm not trying to be funny or disparage someone else's religion. Please be respectful with your replies.

As a scientist, I am always looking for evidence. The golden plates would be a great archeological find if they were displayed somewhere.

As others have said they are not on display, but there is a church history museum in Salt Lake City that has lots of other cool things on display - things like an original print Book of Mormon, some original pioneer gear, some architectural elements of old temples, and old pipe organs - pretty cool craftsmany stuff.

To answer your question to Cuchlain - yes, others have seen it; check out the testimony of the eight and three witnesses:

http://scriptures.lds.org/en/bm/eghtwtns

these are in the introduction pages of the Book of Mormon.

That's awesome! Joesph Smith is a very popular historical figure; the founder of Mormonism, it's first prophet. This does not mean you have to become Mormon, but it's an interesting ancestry connection. The Mormons are good people, very family centered. Most of the world's Christians would consider them non-Christians for being unorthodox in theology. Although even I as a Roman Catholic respect them, good people with a very interesting story. Have fun with it, do some research!!

Joseph Smith was by no means the only person who ever saw the metal plates on which the Book of Mormon was engraved. Fifteen other men also saw the plates and many gave a detailed description of them. Their testimonies can be found in all modern copies of the Book of Mormon.

See http://www.allaboutmormons.com for more information about Mormons.

They were taken back by the angel Moroni, along with the Interpreters (Urim). This was to protect the untranslated portion from the angry (Christian??) mobs, and perhaps from Smith himself who seems to have apostatized soon after completing the work. Many others such as Oliver Cowdery personally saw and handled the plates himself. He took this testimony to his grave even after being excommunicated from the church because he opposed many of the innovations that Smith and others were bringing into the church.

And where are the original Bible writings? Are they on display somewhere too? What came first, the chicken or the egg?

I would guess that if not in Salt Lake City. If not, there is a temple in Navou or Navoo(sp) Illinios.
