Ok, I tried to install Vista on my old Compaq computer. Originally the computer had Windows 98, I upgraded as soon as XP came out, and it is currently running Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2.

These are the minimum system requirements listed on the Microsoft website for running Vista:
1) 800 MHz processor and 512 MB of system memory
2) 20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
3) Support for Super VGA graphics
4) CD-ROM drive
As far as I can tell the only requirement that my computer doesn’t meet is the 512 MB of system memory. I believe that I only have 256 MB of system memory. Please don’t answer that Vista sucks, or stick with XP. I also don’t really want to use any type of emulator unless it looks exactly the same. I tried Vista Transformation Pack, and I’m just not happy with the way that it looks. So, all in all I need to either find a way to fool my computer or install more system memory, I’m not willing to put more than $50 into the memory.

You will need more memory to run Vista, as vista is very graphics intense. Also, your video card may not be up to snuff for Vista. Chances are, your PC will not support it, hands down. You can try to install more memory, but it really won't run that well.

Your choices are)

1) Buy a new computer with Vista on it.

2) Install more memory and hope for the best.

3) Stick with XP.

Ha yeah well i think installing vista on a fresh harddrive takes up between 14-18 gbs... SO
You need at least 1 gig of ram from your computer. Otherwise it will run all choppy. You need more harddrive space...
So really you should just buy a new computer with vista on it. Much more simple.
I am unsure if you have a good enough preocessor or graphics card though... So yeah just get a new computer.

The disk that came with your laptop is incase you have to do a full re-install, so that copy has been activated. This would prevent you from activating it on the desktop. Also, since you say the desktop is an older model, it propably would not meet the requirements that Vista requires. Remember Microsoft when putting out any new software, they release what they say is minimum and recommended requirements. In reality, while the software will work at the minimum (barely), you should always go with the recommended as the real minimum.

ok just for everybodys information i have a intel CELERON on my vista computer and it is not choppy at all and i can play my games like Needforspeed carbon and so on and so on and it does just fine. I have no problems with vista hardly at all. and i think people are just making a big consparicy about vista.
but 800mhz would be cutting it very close though.
and 20-15from vista=5gig for programs and today thats not all that great. but system mem. if you want ok running be more in the 1 gig ram range. i had 512 and it was like loading windows xp on a pentium 1 pc(which its not possible)

Hey,actually if you want your computer work efficiently, then better use XP Instead Of Vista Because RAM Is The Soul Of Computer...you are providing exactly half of the ram required..this damages your RAM Circuit and probably your computer will work much slower than it had run ever....i think, computer is more smarter than us!We can't fool it!

you cant pal and even if u could it is just a waste coz it will be very slow and the graphics sucks. they say the minimum requirement are 800 and so on but these are just test requirements to run vista. to get all of the new windows u need a powerful computer like P4 at least 2GHz and 1GRam and a good graphic card.

So what happened?? You said you tried to install, and then nvr tell us what the problem is. You're going to need the memory, and depending on your cpu, it might not be worth your time. If you have a 1.3 Ghz processor, it'll probably take half an hour just to load. Probably work once you've upgraded your memory....

It is never going to be worth it. Vista is way to much for your PC. And even if you get there you will have driver issues and speed issues.

More people are trying to get away from Vista... do the same.

Honestly? If you put Vista on a machine with that spec it will die. I have a 2Gb CoreDuo with a vista rating of 4.2 and it's still slow. I wouldn't even think about it.

Don't even bother with Vista if you don't have at least 1gig of RAM. If your OS eats up all of your RAM then every program you run on your comp will completely choke.
