I suggest contacting a lawyer. They will contact the city or district attorney and arrange how and when you will "turn yourself in". Obviously if you haven't done anything wrong and the police are asking you to turn yourself in, you most definitely need to speak to an attorney first.

Yeah, they might lock you up, they can for 3 days then they have to let you go or charge you with a crime. If you or someone you know does turn themselves in, be sure they bring evidence they didn't commit the crime.

Depending on the crime, yes-they put you in a cell, fingerprint you, and make your criminal record. Then you are held until a court hearing can happen, to which you plead guilty or not guilty. (preliminary hearing).
You are either released because bail has been set and you are told to return to court at a later date.
You can also ask for a public defender if you can't afford a lawyer.

IF they have a warrant issued for you, it is generally easier to go and turn yourself in, opposed to being embarrassed at work, school, church or home.
If youy did not committ the offense GET A LAWYER
