Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Rev 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

What's interesting is that there seem to be some translation problems from the original hebrew with the Adam and Eve story. As I understand it, Adam would more accurately be translated to "mankind" and Eve would more accurately be translated to "life" - that makes Mankind tempted by Life to taste of the tree of Knowledge. This is very different, if you ask me.
With that in mind, I would say that Satan as the serpent is also a mistranslation - though knowledge does come with it's dark side. I think the story was likely spun to have more control over the masses. More likely the story was meant to convey that Humanity as a group chose this existence for education rather than idle play - and any Father would have been proud of such a choice, not called it sin.
Peace!

Was identified as Satan? Who says? The Bible only says that the serpent was the craftiest of all the animals.
The snake was chosen because the religion before Judaism... some Sumerian religion, had a snake god "Nirah". Its common for religions to demonize previous religion's gods.

God's Word abounds with figures of speech, symbolism, Hebraisms, metaphors, and types, for example, the seven churches in the Book of Revelation.
On the one hand, if I said to you, I'm going to paint the town red tonight, you would probably understand this figure of speech.
On the other hand, if I said the above to someone from China, for instants, he might think I'm going to grab a bucket of red paint, a brush, and paint the town red.
And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life (Christ) also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Satan). Genesis 2:9
And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent (Satan) beguiled me (wholly seduced ... took her virginity), and I did eat. Genesis 3:13

The serpent in the garden of Eden was the most beautiful and intelligent. Since humans especially woman seem to be drawn to such things, it was easy for the devil to deceive in this way.

Well the serpent was able to talk and was leading Eve to commit a sin, so it was obviously not a regular serpent.

Look up "garden of Eden", Adam and Eve and read the story for yourself. There is a concordance in the back of most Bibles where you can find passages with key words.
The Bible tells us that the "snake" was Satan and that he tempted Eve to disobey the ONE rule God had for them by causing her to doubt what God had told them. He made it sound like God was holding out on her by not allowing anyone to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. She was deceived. This is only a small part of what the Bible describes as "satans plan of evil" and how the devil has usurped both of Gods created realms, heaven and earth, and the Bible tells the story of how God WILL reclaim both of those realms.
You can also go to www.enjoythebible.com and order a copy of the book "Satan and his plan of evil" by Keith Blades. Best book I have ever read , including ALL the relevant scriptures, of Satans fall, and Gods plan to re establish His rightful rule in BOTH realms.

Because nobody likes snakes/serpents(translation). So whoever wrote the book, compared something that they dont want you to like with something that you probably already dont like.
