When you have the document open in Word, click File - Save As. In the Save As Type area, scroll down until you see something like "Word 97-2003 & 6.0/95 - RTF"

Save the document, then email it.

I'm not sure just how many file extensions are offered in Word 07, but open the document in Word and then save it as either a .rtf or .doc, then resend it. Then older versions of Word will be able to open it. I believe the problem is that Word 07 saves all files as .xml or something like that.

You can go into Tools and then Options and then the "Save" tab. Here you can set Word to save in a different file extension.

Just open your doc and save a copy with the .rtf extension, that should be backward compatible for others, the formatting may not be exactly the way you want it, but it should be close.
