I can get a beautiful 19" LCD monitor for less than $200, yet an LCD TV of similar or lesser resolution will cost me $500. Sure, I know it needs a tuner, but can that really account for a $300 difference?

A LCD computer monitor is just a monitor but the LCD TV can be part computer monitor and TV. And the ATSC tuners which tune in digital stations have a licensing fee which is associated with the manufacturer that developed the standard. Also there is the initial cost of producing something that is not yet selling to a mass market. Everyone with a computer needs a new monitor now and then. Most people probably purchase a new monitor when they purchase a new computer. But not everyone buys a LCD TV.

It has to do with the tuner, as well as all the added inputs that need to configured with it. In Addition LCD TV's have a much higher resolution than LCD Computer Monitors.
