I just got a ps3 and need to update it but don't have it for the internet. Is there a way to do it through playstation.com, download the update, burn it to DVD, insert DVD in ps3 and install it that way?

Yes, you can go online to the us.playstation.com website and take a USB flash drive or a SD Memory card and save the update to it and then you put in the USB drive/SD Memory card with the update and transfer it to the PS3.

Also before saving the update to a USB drive, you need to create a folder on the USB drive called: PS3. Then after you make the PS3 folder click on the PS3 folder and create another folder in the PS3 folder called: UPDATE

After you make the correct folders then save the update inside of the UPDATE folder.

Here is a direct link to it:

Just buy a new game. The games come with new updates. Some games you can't play with older versions and therefore the updates are on the game disks. When you put the game disk in the PS3 it will prompt you to update the version before you can play the game.

To my knowledge no, it wont let you transfer an update to a memory stick or thumb drive. So basically, you're forced to download it directly to your PS3.
