He talks rubbish, distorts history and makes extravagent claims about the pacifism of Islam that - like the claims for the pacifism of Christianity - are simply not born out in reality.

World peace cannot and will never start with religion. Religion is the ultimate irrational cause for people to believe themselves superior and their values special. Peace begins with compromise. Religion has no compromise.

Interestingly, the one world leader I would say is a great speaker for peace and who is religious is Desmond Tutu. And interstingly he is now entirely at odds with his own church for its uncompromising views that are hostile to various minorities.

Yusuf has occasionally found himself mired in controversy, from Muslims and non-Muslims alike. He has been denounced for appearing with the Bush administration after 9/11, and has been frequently called Bush's "pet Muslim"
Hamza Yusuf was born as Mark Hanson in Walla Walla, Washington and was raised in Northern California in a Greek Orthodox family Hanson converted to Islam in Santa Barbara, California, after having a near-death experience in a car accident which led him to read the Qur'an and eventually become a Muslim.
