Atheists do not try to convert people. They merely explain theirs views when someone tries to convert them. Christians can be very forceful and self righteous when trying to convert. We live an an age where anyone over the age of 16 has already been exposed to countless Christian doctrines and therefore the great commission is outdated.

This atheist has a problem with Christians "trying to convert people" because it is important for all human beings to understand what is actually real and what is merely an imaginary tradition. Thanks to Aristotle, all of Western Civilization including Christianity and Islam, is based on a false fundamental premise. The error was discovered in 1590 CE and tremendous progress has occurred since. Unfortunately, Christians and Muslims care nothing for the actual physical truth and would rather drag humanity back into the ignorant past, than allow us to achieve our full intellectual and social potential. I have a problem with Christians proselytizing because the obsolete superstitions they're peddling deny the true nature of objective reality and seriously undermine our species' ability to thrive and prosper. Yes, we atheists do encourage others to see things our way. The critical difference is that we have actual reality on our side and we can prove it.

I never cease to be amazed that so many believers imagine the true nature of reality is a matter of their personal beliefs. As far as I'm concerned, after enduring a lifetime of being subjected to their ignorant superstitions, Christians have no right to complain when someone earnestly tries to explain the truth about how objective reality actually operates. How did so many people actually get through school without learning anything real?

how many wars have been fought that didnt have 2 do with 2 separate religious beliefs or the same but extremely different views.
when a war is won the victorious write the history of the event in their point of view as fact.
religion is just a way for leaders control the masses or at least enough to carry out what they feel compelled to do during their time of power.
i dont have to convert Christians they always come to me and i give back every statement they throw at me until they leave me alone.
because i have better things to do than shove my beliefs in a strangers face and tell them their life has been meaningless w/o god

Because you are very annoying when you do it. Atheist groups do in places that discussion is invited. If someone watches a debate, or comes to a forum like this they are looking to talk about it.

When was the last time an atheist knocked on your door or handed you a "tract" when you were just walking down the street? It happens the other way all the time.

Not every atheist tried to convert. the RRS has a belief that all religion is inherently bad and they're free to think that but they don't speak for all atheists or even most atheists.

Now if christians or other religions make outright insane claims that effect everyone including those that aren't christians then I'll speakout against it. things like getting creationism taught in science rooms when it's clearly not science.

If they wanna teach it in theology, then that's fine by me.

...because it interferes with the vast brainwashing apparatus which declares over and over that evolution as origins is fact and has been proven. (Yet all the mythical half creatures they believe in have never been seen, dead or alive! just a few particles assembled by whomever held out as "proof". Mythical half creatures such as half whale half land cow.. now tell me, how did this creature survive the hundreds/thousands/millions/trillions of years it was evolving from a whale to a cow? When it was no longer efficient as a whale, but not yet as a cow? This of course is only one of their mythical creatures. And only one of the many questions as to the problems with evolution. Say just where did the information code in all living things come from anyway? Show me a computer and/or program which evolved from nothing to what it is, and I'll quit telling people that death is the true anomaly, and not Life.)
Peace!

Hmmmm, you can't "convert" someone to not believing.
Also, atheists don't do that anyway, they merely defend a rational lifestyle from the ever-encroaching hands of the religious right wing, and try to promote a more pragmatic way of life.
I have a problem with people encouraging a lifestyle that tells people to shun science and to discriminate against people whose lifestyle runs contrary to a book.

It ain't just the atheists who have a problem with people knocking on your door to proselytize. I believe in God but what I believe and how I choose to express it are very personal. I find when I get one of those unwelcome visits I offer to let them say whatever they want with the understanding that I get equal time and they listen to my thoughts - so far no takers and the bonus is they don't come back.

Actually, I find atheists do that type of thing a whole lot less than Christians do. And if an atheist can't get you to think, they usually just leave you alone, albeit with a remark or two. Christians just keep trying to drill in the "you'll burn and suffer in hell for eternity!" point until you either shut the door or get down right nasty to them.

I do not hand out "atheist tracts" to children trick or treating, nor do I try to convert others. I will point out lack of evidence or faults in peoples reasoning when they post questions, but this is true whether the question is religious or not.
