I talk to so many people about the war and I always hear different point of views. I have a fiance who is currently serving at Camp Taji which is slightly north of Baghdad. He has been there since July and probably won't return home until October. First I am pretty perplexed that he is a National Guard member, and has to serve such a long tour. Most of the people I know who are active duty and do this at their regular job have less lengthy tours. Why is this? I always thought the National Guard was hence here for the "National" defense. Also, as he has learned and told me the Iraqi army is VERY corrupt. But who would of thought, right? So do we really think that once our mission is accomplished in Iraq that the government will truly be capable of handling the issues that exist. I am so torn between what I feel. In a way I want the war to be over, but in a way I know that we need to complete the mission. If we don't all the lives lost so far were lost for nothing. Is that fair to them?

So is a 16 month tour considered normal. I realize that he could be called active duty and could go to Iraq. But I always heard that only the active duty would be pulling the long tours. Not the national guard. I remember before he left there was a issue on the news talking about this. But I guess I was mistaken.

His tour is not longer than regular Army tours. Also, when he enlisted in the Guard, he knew that he may be called to active duty. (whether you knew that or not is irrelevant)
There is a lot of corruption in the Iraqi Army, but there are also a lot of good men. Yes, they will be able to take care of themselves as long as we do not cut and run too early.
Ask those who enlisted after the Iraq war started. You will find that nearly 100% support our efforts. There are a few of those who enlisted for the GI Bill or for Enlistment bonuses, are a different story. They are the ones crying in their pillows at night because they just want to go home. They thought all they had to do was walk straight. Thankfully, there are not that many.

The only militarys in the world that are not very corrupt are the Western Alliances which include GB, Canada, Japan, S Korea, Australia, USA, New Zealand, and NATO countries. National Guard is a part of the regular army. Just like the reserves are a part of their services. In addition the AF and the CG have civil Auxerilleys that help only in country and are never deployed overseas.

I'm sorry you have to be so far from your fiancé. I hope all goes well for you both.
Unfortunately for everyone involved, that region of the world is not better off than it was before we invaded. Every general or other military commander who has been there and come back says the same thing. It is basically a civil war.
Of course the military there is corrupt, it was before we got there too.
There are certain things about people that you can't forcibly change. Like trust for example. If a culture doesn't trust their government to help them when they need it, how are you going to forcibly change that? That is what is behind the corruption. If everyone has grown up with a corrupt government, how can they be forced to believe that now it will be free of corruption? And since people already believe it is corrupt, who is going to be the first to not abuse his or her power?
It will be these peoples children and grandchildren that conspire to bring down the west. Why? Because of what is happening in their country right now at our hand.

My husband is over there now currently winding down a 15 month tour. I too, want this war to be over. I know what you mean about pulling out and the soldiers who have already died for this war. I get puzzled and confused myself. I do know that 9/11 was something that occurred and needed fast response and we gave it to them. Now we are trying to free country from terror among their own people that does not want it bad enough. Perfectly capable Iraqi men are fleeing Iraq and coming to the U.S(which it stuipid on our part for allowing them) as refugees and yet, our husbands have to go over there and fight against their own people for them. Then again, we are fighting a group of people that want to kill anyone not like them(being muslim). So, no, i do not understand everything, but at the ame time, I dont wnat to sit bakc an dlet them attack us again

The war in Iraq ended with the fall of Saddam Husein. We won, by the way.
Everything after that has been the US military acting in the role of police to keep order in the vacuum of power we created.
That is not the purpose of the military and their struggle shows that.

The private contractors are under FBI investigation for gun running right under our noses in Baghdad. so corrupt! But who would of thought, right?
Its disingenuous, at best, to suggest throwing away good lives after bad, will save the honor of the cannon fodder who have already been sacrificed for the likes of EXXON-MOBIL, BP, CONOCO-Philips etc....You do realize that that is what they sacrificed their lives for don't you?? Why do you think the children of the ruling Elite have stayed far away from that FIASCO???
