Well if you are a US cit and you are departing from a US territory to go to a US territory such as US VI, then no you do not need a passport. However...you do need to have a govt issued photo ID, such as a drivers license plus proof of US citizenship such as a birth certificate (and the original one or a govt issued duplicate with a raised seal because photocopies will not be accepted) to enter back into the mainland states. please see travel.state.gov under travel and passport

The US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, among other places, are US territories.... you DO NOT need a passport.

I travel there on business every once-in-a-while.

Of course, if you are not a US citizen you will need a passport.

And if you happen to have one, bring it, just in case you want to take a side trip to a neighboring non-US island.... but for the USVI, you dont need one.

I went on a cruise in April, and we needed to a passport to even get on the ship. I know 100% that you definitely need it for St. Maarten!
