Hi everyone! I am 5 1/2 months pregnant (22 weeks). I recently found out i either tore a muscle under my left breast around the ribs or have a muscle strain. Yesturday i sneezed and i felt a pop and now the pain is worse than ever. I obviously pulled the muscle again making it worse. Now it's almost impossible to even cough cause it hurts soo bad and sneezing is just out of the ? considering that's what make it worse. The doc said the only thing i can do it take Tylenol to ease the pain and it could take up to weeks maybe even a month or so for it to completely heal. My ? is....can this muscle strain affect the baby and can coughing a lot put stress on the baby. I mean im in a lot of pain when i cough, very sharp stabbing pain..does it affect the baby for ME to be in pain. Please help!! Thanks! :)

No, it won't hurt the baby, but tylenol is not good for your liver or the babies, I suggest going into a natural foods store and asking them what would be the safest for you and the baby for pain relief and muscle ache. Get well soon.

Normally at 22 weeks, the muscle strain or coughing will not physically harm the baby because the baby is surrounded by a sac of fluid. Emotionally you may affect the baby if you remain depressed or worried, Try to relax.

get out the heating pad...I don't think it will hurt the baby, your doctor would of said something, I know what you are going through, because i did this with a cough that was really bad. If I were you, I would get in bed or on the sofa with the heating pad. Rest and relaxation will help alot....don't do anything more that you have to for several days to give yourself time to heal..

You have nothing to worry about. I run an ob/gyn practice and see situations like this all the time. While you may be in pain your baby is in no way compromised based on the information you have given. Believe me "mother nature" protects babies while in utero in many incredible ways. If you still have concerns consult your obgyn. Hope you feel better!
