I much prefer the way Hillel, a great Jewish teacher who lived about a hundred years before Jesus, said, "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn." This was his reply when he was asked to sum up all the Tanakh. (Jewish Bible)
To do unto others what you want ..often leads to people trying to impose their will on you because they believe it is right and want everyone else to jump on that bandwagon.
Is that a thing they would want others to do to them?
( I'm thinking MISSIONARIES here )
Hillel also said another thing that is one of my favorite quotes: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am for myself alone, what am I? If not now, when?"
wise words to live by
Shalom :)

No, the statement is not inverse and it is proactive. You should treat them how you want to be treated GIVEN A SITUATION. If I am a jerk to you you should react how you'd wantt o be treated if you were acting like a jerk. Maybe that is to have the other person also act like a jerk, but I doubt it.
Also, there has to be an abstraction about the Golden Rule. You might want a certain woman to have her way with you regardless of what you say, but if you do the same to her it's not morally good, it's rape and is bad. If you universalize the rule, it's clear you don't want to be raped by just anyone, it's a specific woman. In the same way, you should treat a person acting like jerk the way you hope any given person would treat you if you were acting like a jerk.

Probably not. All that means is that the person who's treating you badly is probably NOT living according to the Golden Rule.

I don't think so- they are not following the rule- so if you are treated badly, treat them STILL like you would WANT to be treated- that isn't easy, but that is what it says.

Everyone doesn't live by the Golden Rule, obviously; I still treat everyone the way I want to be treated, regardless.

That rule means to treat others as you want to be treated.......not treat others as they treat you. Hasn't your Momma ever told you that "two wrongs don't make a right"? I know mine has and I live by that. I was also told "To kill them with kindness." That means that no matter what they do to you and say to you, be nice to them. They are the ones that will look like foolish idiots in the end.

We shouldn't be living by any golden rules but by the Bible.
"Treat other as you want to be treated" applies to the reader only.
Do not apply to the rule on others but yourself and only yourself. If someone treats you badly, you supposed to forgive him/her.You may be living by the golden rules of the earth but I can tell you that the earth doesn't last forever.
God bless ya.

I do not suggest following the golden rule. If I treated women the way I want them to treat me -- I would be in jail.
Instead, I treat them the way THEY want to be treated.

If someone wants to treat you badly they are not in the will of God. Treat them the way you want to be treated with respect.

I treat others as I want to be treated, I do, but often I am not treated well so instead of treating them badly back I think of the other saying.....What goes around comes around,........and I leave it at that.........

That's dumb. Obviously, others who treat you badly don't follow this rule at all and you know that. It's up to you to take the high road...or not... but you know which is morally right and which is morally wrong. Do the right thing.
