I accidentally clicked the button "Sort by Name", and got all my listed favorites in alphabetical order, not grouped by subject as I like them.

How do I get the Favorites list back to where it was, without retyping everything? (Win xp)

Click on the "Add to Favorites" button (star with plus sign) - on the drop down select "Organize Favorites". When the window opens, you can drag your favorites up/down in the list to re-order them.

OK, I see what you mean, you right clicked on a favorite and selected Sort by Name in the shortcut menu list.

The only way you can change this back would be to make a change in the Registry. As the Registry is very tricky, and somebody could easily mess up their system to the point the OS would need to be reinstalled, I don't think I will provide any instructions on its usage. I will provide you a hint. Before making any changes in the Registry, do two things:

First, set a manual Restore Point with System Restore. It is easy and only takes a moment or two to do so, and protects your system from any mistakes you make along with other items. It is a good idea to get into the habit of setting a manual Restore Point before making any changes to anything in your system and your programs. Had you created a manual Restore Point before clicking on the menu item, Sort by Name, you could just have went and ran the Restore Point you created, and it would have restored your favorites back to the way they were.

Second: Back up the Registry before changing anything in it. It is simple to do. To locate KB articles which decribe how to back up the Registry, go to the Microsoft Help and Support website and put in the search terms How do I back up the registry?

Good luck and much success fixing your Favorites. Just create a manual Restore Point before messing with items you are unsure what the results will be.

*Edit* The simplist way to change your Favorites back to how they were is to use the Organize Favorites dialog box. Just grab your favorite and drag it into the posistion you prefer. Do this for each one, and hopefully you have been using folders to group your favorites by subject, such as Shopping, or Games, or IE7 Help articles, etc.

you can move them 1 at a time , best way is to rename them put a number infront of each link , ie a number 1 before all fun links , 2 infront of all shopping links etc. then sort again this will regroup your links together
