My cat is 5yrs. old and all of a sudden it is spraying in one area of the house. He uses his litter box properly, but why the spraying?

Spraying is often a cry for help. Your cat may be ill or feeling severely stressed for some reason. If he hasn't been seen by a vet recently, it's worth taking him for a check up to make sure he's not suffering from a urinary or bladder infection.

If stress is the cause, you need to establish the source of his anxiety, and either eliminate or alleviate it. Feliway is good for helping cats feel more emotionally secure, but you need to use it for at least 3 weeks before you start to see the benefits.

The Celia Haddon Cat Problem page has a really good article entitled Feline Territory Marking which has lots of information about why cats begin spraying (not just territorial) and good advice about how to stop the problem, products to use for cleaning and preventing further reoccurences.

Hope this helps.

He's claiming his territory. Get him neutered, he'll stop.
That's a smell that nothing can get out.
