yesterday, my daughter was sent home from kindergarten because she was coughing. she had no fever or anything like that. she is at the end of a cold, the kind that hangs around forever!! she is otherwise fine.
my question is, would you send your kid back to school the next day? or should she be kept home? i dont want them to think i am sending her to school sick on purpose. i just dont think she is sick enough to miss so much school. i will probably keep her home though.
any thoughts? she is my first in school, so i am new to this :)

I know all about this cough. I had it last winter and it lingered for about two months, even though I felt fine. If your child is otherwise okay, I'd send her off to school anyway. I'm surprised the school sent her home in the first place. When I was a kid, even a blizzard wasn't good enough reason to send us home from school. My parents kept us home a few times because there was a blizzard, yet the school didn't close for the day.

I'd keep her home just to be safe. You said she's at the end of a cold, so she's still able to give this to another child. Kindergarteners aren't the best at remembering to cover their mouth when they cough and a cough spreads many feet. The teacher has to look out for the well being of her other students and if she saw something that could get them sick too, she needs to send the sick child home. Medicine isn't allowed in schools unless you have a note from the doctor, so unless you're willing to go to school yourself to give her some cough syrup, she's best staying at home until the cough subsides a bit.

If she is just coughing, but not feeling sick or fever or anything, I would send her. Give her some cough medicine before school, maybe send some cough drops with her and a note for the teacher. Teachers just worry because of spreading germs, and everybody in the class getting sick. Little kids tend to forget to cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze.

unless it was a really bad cough, i'm surprised school sent her home. our school has specific guidelines about when a child should be kept (or sent) home and it only includes a cough if the cough is so severe that it's interfering with normal activities.

my 8-year-old has asthma (which is not contagious) and if i kept her home every time she had a cough, she'd never get educated! but even for my other kids, i certainly wouldn't keep them home for a mild cough. on the other hand, i kept my 4-year-old home from preschool the other day because she had a pretty constant cough, and was tired from being up most of the night coughing. so i guess it depends on the degree and the cause.

If coughing was the only thing going on I would give them some cough medicine and send them to school. Try to reserve sick days for fevers and stomach viruses. If you don't think she's sick enough to miss school then send her. This is totally your call. Good luck :)

If she is not running a fever, then I don't see any reason to keep her home. They probably sent her home yesterday because she was coughing loudly and disrupting the class. I've heard of teachers doing that before.

I think you should send her to school. Give her some cough medicine to aleviate the cough while in school. Save the sick days for when she has something like diarhea, fever, vomiting, or anything that can be considered contagious.

I would and i have sent me child to school with a cough and a runny nose....if i was to keep my child home from school with every little sign of a cold he would never get to go to school. There is no reason why she cannot go to school with a simple cough.
