I've been away from home for four months for work and already, my Pitbull forgot who I am (Barking on me, non-stop). But my dachshund still remembers me (I guess). Cause she acted excited when I came home (unlike when she sees strangers, she barks like crazy).
My question again is how long does a dog's memory last? Does it depend on the breed? Or are there such characteristics as a dumb dog?

A dog's memory last long but I can't exactly tell you for how long. Probably your bond with the bitbull isn't as strong as your bond with the dachshund. It's not depending on the breed.
But if for instance you're training your dog and the dog make a mistake, you need to correct it on the spot. (In less than 2 minutes). Because after 2 minutes the dog forgets what he'd done wrong. And if you impose a punishment on the spot, make sure the cool off time is about 2 minutes. If your punishment is to make him sit in a corner, make sure it's 2 minutes. After the 2 minutes, your dog might wonder, "hey, why am I doing here in this corner?"
Haha, believe it or not.

Maybe he hasn't forgotten you? When I was a little kid, my dad traveled a lot with work. He was gone for about a month one time in another country. When he came home, I was mad at him because I thought he'd abandoned us. I was too young to realize he had to go. Maybe your pit bull is upset that you left?
My 2 year old cocker still remembers things from when he was a puppy- I'm sure of it. My brother, who only visits once a year or so, will come around and my dog STILL remembers getting scared by him as a puppy. He hides behind my couch. My brother barked back at him when he was about 12 weeks old, and the poor thing nearly had a heart attack.

One of my dogs had a TERRIFIC memory... she remembered people that she saw years apart at a time... even to whether or not they liked HER...she'd stay away from those who didn't care for dogs! She had a 'clock' in her head and would begin to get excited fifteen minutes before my husband or my son was due home from work. On the other hand, have been the loving owner of a prize idiot too! And I loved him just as much! It's like people...everybody's different! My present dog likes her meals and walks at the same time every day...and she'll come get me from whatever I'm doing when it's 'time'!

They just finished a new study at Cal Poly in Northern California. It doesn't matter HOW long you are gone. It could be a half-hour or 7 years... a dog has no perception of time. They will always remember you. That is why when you are gone for only a few minutes, they still get really excited as if you have been gone all day.

They say dogs are dumb, they forget, they have no minds but it is not true the dogs I have rehabbed and placed with families have never forgot me and I might not see them for months at a time only to pull up get out to do a surprise home visit and they come running to me as if we were still working to get them back on their feet.
They als want to try to leave with me so think of something you used to do with him and take it from there.
