Honestly guys and gals, tell me...if you are against all religion, why don't you just go about your merry ways and keep your disbelief to yourselves? Honestly....tell me, why it is that you feel the need to heckle people who do believe? What joy does this actually give you?
My brother in law does not believe and is a self proclaimed athiest, however his daughter, my niece, is married to a Lutheran Pastor. He doesn't have this need to be obscene with Christians and I'm wondering what gives with those of you who do.
Please tell.

Money and many others - I appreciate your honest answers and the fact that you've given it without being a total toad like so many have done. I appreciate those of you who have explained it as a political irritation to you. Believe me, Christians have political irritations as well. Won't go into those here and now...also, I appreciate those of you who say that the board would be no fun without opposing opinions. I would have to agree. As for why I ask this question, it's just something that has been confusing to me lately. I need to understand where the hate comes from. I don't "push" my religion...or shove it down the throats of anyone, but if anyone ask me, I will proudly stand and proclaim my Saviour. Nuff said, carry on.
And wow...it's a tight run here for best answer! So far it's between 3 of you.

I like this forum because there are those that would ask questions of Atheists and have them answer honestly. Some religious people (not just Christians) value the opinions of those of differing faiths.
Not only that, but the whole point of Y!A is to share knowledge and opinions, not to simply agree with one another. I think we can safely say that if everyone had the same thing to say about a given topic, it would get pretty boring pretty quickly. That would be the case in any of these forums really.
Sorry that you've had to come across those Atheists who tend to bash people of religion. They're the ones who gives Atheism a bad name. They are the ones who make people think that to be an Atheist is to "hate God". That's not what it is at all. Being an Atheist is to disbelieve that any god or gods exist.
By the same token , it irks me, as well as others, to come across those religious folks who either bash us or try to convert us to their religion. Not only is the attempt at conversion irritating, but sometimes it's downright offensive.
Basically, I think that people should just learn how to share their respective opinions without coming down on others.
Hope all that answered you're question. I know I basically wrote a novel there.

I have nothing wrong with it really - the presence of atheists stops all the religious people of different religions from trying to kill each other constantly.
The problem is that it doesn't matter whether your an atheist, a christian, a muslim, a buddhist, a satanist, a pagan or whatever - what matters is that we keep a level head and don't try and ram our beliefs down other people's throats - like certain atheists, Christians, Muslims, Satanists and pagans (although i've never seen a pagan tell ANYONE what to believe in) seem to enjoy doing.
All it does is make a community that has the potential to do the greatest good on this planet look like a group of squabbling children.

not all of us are trying to be obscene (at least not all of the time). i have great interest in religion as a subject, and i am fascinated about humankind's need for all things spiritual.
usually, i'm just looking for thoughtful questions where people can discuss religion and share opinions on hot topics, etc. and with the way that religion is factoring into global politics these days (in an alarmingly backwards moving fashion) it is important for people to openly talk about religion, the differences, similarities, benefits, and drawbacks.
though i am not above answering questions in a less than polite manner, it often stems from frustration at reading countless questions/responses from people who are close minded, petty, ignorant individuals (who would be so regardless of their beliefs) and i get fed up and vent on someone. i have a feeling that lots of people do the same thing, from all sides of the debate.

I am not against any religion. I simply don't believe in any gods. I am here to share my knowledge and some life experiences with others regarding religion. As a side note without atheists the R&S section would be pretty boring and even religious people would not come to it. The only thing you would see would be prayer requests and one religion bashing another religion. Most of the insightful questions are either asked by religious folks towards atheists or by atheists.

Well, I'll answer your questions....
First, we rarely troll. Some might, most don't.
Second, we come on this forum because it is "Religion & Spirituality" which is a shining beacon in the night to us. It draws us like a moth to a flame. Why, you might ask.... well, read on;
Third, we know for a fact that this is one of the most humorous forum on Y/A. This is where we get our laughs on Answers. (Well, Police and Law Enforcement gets pretty funny, too). Nothing provides more huge belly-laughs than reading the crapola that gets shoveled on this forum. And, you all are so funny when you get riled up and start spouting your "bible-babble"...and you're so easy to rile.
Fourth: It renews our firm belief that y'all are worthy of constant monitoring to make darned sure that "freedom of religion" stays in place in our Constitution. We keep you guys grounded in reality when you start spouting about allowing prayer in schools, posting the 10 commandments on public buildings, swearing on bibles in courts and such. We remind you that you are not the only people in the U.S., that we are a nation of diversity, that not all people worship your god; some worship others gods and some don't believe any of it.
Fifth: We are here to remind you that, just because you say you are Christian - or whatever, you aren't endowed with any special rights over anyone else. We are here to remind you that most who claim to be "christian" certainly don't live the principles of your faith....We remind you of your hipocracy.
Sixth: We need to constantly remind you that the U.S. is NOT a "christian nation" built on "christian" beliefs by our "christian" Founders. We need to point you to the direction of the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, the writers of these documents and the fact that they ALL worked against all odds to keep "christians" out of the verbiage.
So, blather on, we'll be here reminding you and others that this is a free country and we can all believe as we wish......

I'll try to answer. Basically, atheists are concerned about the impact that fundamentalists have in this country. Take a look at the Jerry Falwell's and Pat Robertson's of this country and their numerous followers. They involve themselves in an agenda of pushing their religious beliefs into our courts, public schools and government. As atheists, we protest this. Just as you would protest Satanists doing exactly the same thing. Atheists hate to see well meaning people led down a slippery path towards theocracy in our country. You'd soon see fewer atheists on these kind of sites if religion was kept in the home and the church exclusively.

Uh?
You just said, "if you are against religion..."
Do you not understand that?
Yes, we are against religion. It affects our lives every single day, quite negatively. And yes, we are calling the "believers" out on it.
We would be more than happy to keep to ourselves, but Islamic terrorists, and Christian politicians will not allow us to do that.
I know this just went right over your head.
So here's an example maybe you can understand:
If this government became predominantly muslim, for some reason, how would you react?
If the law stated that you, as a woman, had to cover your head when you go out, whether you're a muslim or not... would you sit back and keep your disbelief to yourself?
We won't either. We are not Christians, and we are not going to sit back and let Christians decree that we will live by their laws. And I will also not let them teach my children that our ancestors rode dinosaurs to school.
That is why we "troll" the religion board. Tell your peers to stop trolling my LIFE, and you'll never hear from us again.

Really?
Do you have any idea what you're talking about?
atheist a the ist.... WHAT MAKES IT SO HARD TO SPELL?
aheists don't believe in god, antitheists are against religion- two separate things
You probably want to hear me say something like "Heckling people who constantly annoy us with Jesus advertisements is more fun than picking on mentally disadvantaged folks... its like picking on willingly mentally challenged people!"
But in all reality, my venom is purely defensive. My humor is directed at all those who "get it". This includes theists of all kinds (even a few fundies), atheists, pagans, hindus, and anyone else WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR.
Besides... When I asked about religion in Cats they told me to hit the road. I guess you're stuck.

Anyone has a right to post here as Yahoo has made it an open board. Aside from which I don't troll, I give my viewpoints and if you perceive that as trolling that is your perceptional problem not mine.
When questions like this come up, it often makes me wonder if the person is secure in their faith because it's patently obvious that opposing viewpoints bother them. My christian husband and I discuss religion and he never gets bent out of shape with my thoughts and opinions on his belief nor do I get so when he gives his.

It's too early in the day for a drink, so I'll just sip my coffee.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm here to have a few laughs (intentional or otherwise), learn some things, and to occasionally tweak the noses of the self-righteous.
It doesn't say "Christians Only" anywhere on here, either.
