People do not learn the fine and very necessary art of "forgiveness" these days. Sad, really...
Just remember this - whenever you hold a grudge against someone, you allow them to occupy your mind, rent free...

This question really hits home with me because my youngest sister has not spoken to me for over three years now, and although I have some idea why she took this line I still do not understand it, I can only guess.
All things considered I think she has always been jealous of me, and a particular incident occured with another former family member who was out to cause mischief and so the two got together and ostracised me, causing a big family rift. In other words she saw the chance to put the boot in me and she took it.
At first I was very hurt, distressed, depressed too because I was never previously aware of how she really felt about me and it came as a terrible shock. I have got used to it now, but it still hurts to think the little sister I had always loved could turn so thoroughly against me and hate me like she does.
Various other family members have tried unsuccessfully to help heal this rift, so I guess things will not alter, ever. I have got to the stage now that if she fell on her knees in apology and begged my forgiveness I'd tell her to go hell for what she has put me through.

The only reason that comes to mind is stubborness on the part of sisters. Neither one wants to be the one to admit that they were wrong and they want the other one to make the first move.
On the part of mothers and sons or daughters I believe it is a case of giving them chance after chance and being let down time after time and finally just having had enough. Certainly one person can only take so much.

My Mom had a an accident with her mom in the car. Her mother sued her. My mom ended up not talking to her for 11 years. Then out of no where she decided to get back in touch with her and pay her a visit. The day after we got to her house, she passed away. It was a very awkward situation, but we all missed out on a lot of eachother's lives. At the time, I was young, so I didn't really meet her until I was 17. I don't know anything about her. My mom moved closer to the family is now trying to make up for lost times.

Stubbornness and unforgiven. You quote no sexual abuse but there other serious reasons why people would act that way. Mental abuse, physical abuse, infidelity. habitual lying, religious judgment, prejudice, racism etc. etc.
What really is behind this all, there must have been, what they see as serious negativity going on somewhere.
Unless we know what the actual details are how can we turn around and give advice? "Had enough" of what. What did the rest of the family do that this person saw as unforgivable.
Add a note to your question if you can.

Forever is a long time. Most people don't stay mad at each other forever....Actually after a while what they were mad at each other for is probably not as painful and may even be forgotten.
The idea of bringing it all back again by talking to the opposing party is (in my opinion) the reason people don't start talking again. Or could be they just feel it is too much work to have to work it out.
It's a shame really, life is waaaaay to short not to have absolutely every one in your life.........in your life.

I am in the situation with my sister now. She has been a druggie her whole life. I have helped her a million times. (taking her to methadone clinics when she was pregnant, gave her a place to live with her daughter, took her to rehab after rehab just to have here accuse me of being self righteous when she was caught again shooting up 20 years later. I am just done with all the sh*t. All she ever focuses on is what I don't do for her.

because someone is to stubborn.. or in my case it's because my step daughter can not and will not accept me in her fathers life. so sadly to say it came down between me or his daughter (she was 27 when i met her father so it's not like she's a young kid). we have been trying on and off over the last 6 yrs and nothing is working so until she grows up there will never be a relationship between the two of them. i was also not speaking to two of my sisters and a brother. (for other reasons) after 6 years i found my brother and contacted him and took it from there to finally start talking to my other two sisters. if you're the one having the problem i suggest you never give up. maybe give a cooling off period, but never give up. especially if it's your parent or child. life is to short. i'm hoping that one of these days my husband can have a father/daughter relationship with his child. but it may not happen and it's not because he or i never tried. it takes two people to make the relationship work

I would personally never disregard anyone that is part of my family. of course your going to come across disagreements, but family needs to stick together. The only reason I can see anyone maybe doing this is just because they are stubborn and hard headed and don't feel like they have to make the first move to try and resolve the problem.
