No not really. There were two opposing laws. One was to obey the law of the land and the other was to practice polygamy. Since both could not be done at the time the Prophet asked which one should the church obey. Clearly for obvious reasons the answer came back to obey the law of the land.
As I understand it the law of polygamy was stated as something the church and land was not ready for at this time but could happen again.
The same thing happened in the Bible. There were laws in the Old Testament that were changed in the New Testament.
There were times in the Old testament that laws were changed because the people were not ready for them.

Just like when He changed His mind about polygamy in the New Testament.

Take a look at Mormon history to see how much pressure they were under for a long time for a lot of different reasons, most of them simply because of differing beliefs. I'm surprised that the atrocities committed against the Mormons by the brave citizens of the "land of the free" aren't given more air-time in America's school history classes.

Its based in the same belief as Jewish polytheism.

Did God change his mind in that case? Jesus had to explain to people that they interpret ted it wrong. The Mormons were also in a situation where polygamy is allowed at one point, it just was misapplied, possibly done before, and carried on longer than needed---just like with the Jews.

The government had nothing to do with it.

At the time UT was not a part of the United states.

Polygamy was banned in 1890.

UT was made a state 6 years later.
