I was never very good about ignoring people. I always thought it was strange when people work (and sit) inches from each other day after day at the office but manage to completely ignore each other. They view their coworker as someone who is not worthy of their time or attention.

Recently I was forced to share an office with someone in a very small room and she managed to act like I did not even exist. I was always sitting only a foot from her. I always wondered why she would not speak to me and how she was able to completely ignore me and a variety of others she was so close to physically.

How about you?

i dont think we should ignore anyone even if we dont like them.i think better see tht person in normal way or u can greet tht person with a simple smile.doing this wont make any bad impression upon tht person .but it may change your views about tht person .

I think it's psychotic to be able to actually not notice someone is in the room with you. How is that not totally insane? So, some of you people are saying that, if someone is in the room with you, it can seem like they aren't there at all? And you think that's normal or sane? Whatever.

I think not speaking to someone is something totally different than not noticing them. I think it takes a lot more effort on the part of the person who is doing the ignoring. Because they have to walk around with there noises stuck up in the air or pretending. How much fun could that be?

I also think it's totally immature. Adults handle their problems.

Well, we're talking work here right? Who says that just because you work with someone you have to be their best friend? I personally am tired of the idle chatter and pretending I care about anything other than work with certain people. I can work around people and intentionally not get into their way, but it's usually because I dont appreciate their work ethics or attitudes. It's easier to ignore them than to have a big phony smile on all the time.

I've had that problem and had no problem ignoring the person. You don't do it to be mean, you do it for your own sanity. Nobody likes to spend 8 hours of their day socializing with someone they don't like or who drives them crazy. For your own sanity, you have to learn to just tune them out and go about your own business.

lots of people do this - I don't know if it is necessarily that they don't like someone, I think a lot of people have poor social skills. But if I didn't like someone at work I would be polite and that would be it - no chit chat, no 'how are your kids?' 'what did you do at the w'end?' I wouldn't give a toss!

I have done it.

I was stuck in the same situation with a guy that I didn't like. I would go weeks without acknowledging him. He would comment to my phone conversations (work & personal), he would comment to conversations that were held without him and he was just plain rude.
