I've bought food for food drives sometimes, but I've also donated money -sometimes directly to homeless people, other times to organizations collecting for all kinds of projects in my own country or third world countries (but never at a traffic stop, reminds me of a question asked earlier this week; I would never give to people begging in traffic because I think it's not safe, even when stopped at a red light). It just depends, usually I sort of go with the flow, if there's a food drive I'll throw in some cans and if there's folks collecting money then that's what I'll give.

Other than the necessities like food, shelter, clothing, education, medical assistance (which come first obviously),
I think something like a computer could be life changing. Can give lonely people company and comfort, and can teach people things they want to know.
