It totally depends on the religion. For example:

In Christianity you have to accept Jesus as your savior.

In Islam you have to believe in Allah.

In Hinduism, salvation is not denied, but you will keep being reincarnated. Its like you're given loads of chances to correct your life until one day you achieve your goal of salvation. The same can be said for Jainism and Buddhism.
