I must of injured it at leats 10 years ago as I have always suffered with my back. I am now 32. I did go for physio in my early 20's and was simply told I had an over arched back. It now looks more complicated. The Radiologist said it was rare to see a case so severe and wondered how I coped. Does anyone know, can they push the tailbone, Coxis back into place?? Are there braces available. I suffer with my neck and sleep very badly at night. When on my side by back hurts less but my shoulder hurts, when on my back my neck hurts less but my back hurts. I can't win! I went to the hospital yesterday and was simply told I would have to live with my neck pain and use painkillers for the rest of my life. It just doesn't feel good enough.

It is very painful sitting or standing for any period of time, I can't relax in the evenings, I am constantly finding new positions in the evenings. It is very painful whilst driving etc. Thank you for your answers, I so hope for a referral. I am feeling very dispondant with the NHS and the way I feel pushed aside and told to live on painkillers.

You can, but if that coccyx isn't painful, there's no sense moving that bone. I recommend that you see a very special type of chiropractor, these guys are the very best in understanding and knowledge in how to correct spinal biomechanics. I've referred many patients to them with excellent results.

I know exactly what you mean, mine was broken during childbirth and remained in a reversed position for 18 years.

I have had many treatments performed by numerous specialists over the years to no avail till about 18 months ago when I began to feel the first signs of relief.

Here are the two things that are making all the difference for me:

1. An Osteopath was responsible for the manipulation to correct the coccyx' position and to adjust my hips, lower back, neck and shoulders as my whole spine had been thrown out of whack from adopting poor posture while standing, walking, sleeping and worst of all sitting... 18 years of twisting your body to compensate for the pain is not a good practice to adopt.... trust me.
I continue to receive 6 monthly adjustments just to keep everything in order.

2. A series of cortisone injections directly into the joints have somewhat reduced the amount of inflammation and neuropathic pain I suffer.
I am still receiving this treatment on a fortnightly basis. This process is a little slower however I can feel that it is slowly chipping away at the pain, at least now I can touch the area with out any pain.

Given that my injury has manifested over the past 18 years I didn't expect to have it all sorted out overnight however I am very happy with the progress I have made so far.

I would be interested to see how you get on and I do hope you find a treatment that works for you.

Ask your doctor for a consultation with a Pain Management doctor that is a Dr of Osteopathic Medicine. These doctors offer a lot of things in addition to medications. Some of them therapuetic type procedures that may be able to help move it back in to place.

Also, ask about a doctor called a physiatrist (these doctors work to help rehabilitate injuries like this and may have information as well on braces and such) and maybe consulting with them to see what they suggest.

If you are wearing jeans (snaps, zippers, buttons, rivets), you will be asked to put on a gown. My advice is to wear or bring a pair of sweat pants with you. A hospital gown does not leave much to the imagination and they don't keep you very warm! Most times, if there is no metal in the area being x-rayed, you can keep your street clothing on.
